Automotive Technician I
Section 1 – Position Summary
The Automotive Technician I performs fleet maintenance duties including fleet vehicle inspection, preventative maintenance, diagnosis, adjustment, mechanical and electrical repair, scheduling vehicles for maintenance and repair, and maintaining the necessary vehicle records. This position also performs equipment installation duties, comprehensive safety inspection and testing of new vehicles, assembly, installation, removal and repair of special equipment, and reconditioning of used vehicles to prepare them for sale.
Section 2 – Major Responsibilities
1. Maintains and repairs pickup trucks, service body trucks, grounds equipment, sedans, side by sides, golf carts, ATVs, trailers, Class 8 trucks and trailers used in District operations.
2. Uses computerized diagnostic analyzer systems and performs complex diagnostic work on vehicles/equipment.
3. Adjusts brakes and replaces brake system parts to include air brake and anti-locking systems.
4. Checks lighting and wiring mechanisms to ensure proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, taillights and parking lights.
5. Performs preventive maintenance, inspections and repairs on motor vehicles/equipment; as required operates equipment related to these activities.
6. Performs quality assurance/analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment.
7. Troubleshoots, tests and repairs electrical systems, electronic ignitions and fuel injection systems.
8. Completes repair order paperwork and accurately enters data into Fleet Management Information System (FASTER).
9. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Section 3 – Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
1. Proficient skill in using applicable hand and power tools, equipment and mechanical devices of the trade.
2. Proficient skill in mechanical repair procedures for gasoline and diesel engines.
3. Proficient skill diagnosing problems and repairing equipment to include electronic and mechanical components and subsystems according to defined codes and specifications.
4. Proficient skill in using computers and Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Excel and Word.
5. Ability to read and interpret electrical diagrams and schematics.
6. Ability to follow applicable safety standards, practices and procedures.
7. Ability to communicate effectively.
8. Knowledge of automatic and manual shift transmission repair.
9. Proficient skill in brake repairs to include anti-locking systems, mechanical brakes, air brakes and hydraulic brake systems.
Section 4 – Education and Work Experience
1. Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
2. Two years in Automotive, light/medium vehicle, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.
3. Must have or obtain within 120 calendar days from date of hire a Texas State Inspector's license.
4. Requires a valid Texas Driver’s License
Section 5 – Environmental Factors, Activity Levels and Equipment
This position is subject to continuous physical exertion often of a strenuous nature. Lifts or pulls/pushes 50 to 100 pounds on a daily basis in order to repair vehicles and equipment while using various tools. Working conditions include exposure to weather below 32 and/or above 100 degrees, odor, noise, and dust. Hand and power tools including impact wrenches, drill press and lathe, welding equipment, pickup truck, service truck, emergency lighting equipment and safety equipment. Required to wear PPE, Hi-Viz clothing, hard hat, safety glasses, etc.
