The Apprentice Lineman I position is the first step of seven in the Lead Lineman training program. The position deals directly with ground-related work on overhead and underground electric service crews, including constructing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems for residential, commercial or industrial establishments. A successful candidate prioritizes safety, enjoys physical outdoor work year-round, identifies and mitigates hazardous conditions, and values teamwork.
This position is the first of a seven-step progression to Lead Lineman. This position consists primarily of ground related work on OHD and U/G crews.
Employee will be required to climb poles periodically for training purposes only.
This position also includes construction, maintaining, and repairs to electrical systems for residential, commercial, or industrial establishments by performing the following duties.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
include the following. They are not intended to cover each aspect of the position as the scope and duties of a given position may change or be temporarily altered based on the business needs of Snapping Shoals EMC. The basic requirement of every position is to perform all tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
- Assist in maintaining acceptable levels of standard materials on truck
- Assist in all ground work while linemen are performing their duties
- Assist in installing splices on de-energized U/G secondary and primary conductors
- Assist in placement of U/G transformers and pads
- Assist in terminating U/G cables in transformers
- Assist in the installation of streetlights and related equipment
- Assist in framing and setting of poles
- Assist in digging anchors and pulling wires
- Safe operation of chain saws and basic Right of Way skills
- Drive ground rods
- Place primary and secondary in trench in the construction of an U/G service or subdivision
- Spot/locate other utilities while digging
- Load/unload transformers and other material
- Check voltage in meter base and service stubs using voltmeter
- Assist in patrolling lines during outages
- Assist in safe roadside work zone set up
- Identify visually other utility’s placement and identifying markers
- Start development of knowledge of electrical system hazard recognition
- Start development of knowledge of safe construction work practices
- Required to climb poles periodically for training purposes only and perform Bucket Truck Rescue
- Other duties as assigned
- Read/interpret documents such as safety rules, operating & maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
- Understand and carry out detailed instructions
- Speak effectively with customers or other employees
- Know CPR and basic first aid
- Work overtime as needed
- Obtain Georgia Commercial Driver's License and Medical Examiner's Certificate of Qualification within 12 months
- Right-of-Way work
- Utility design or staking
- Line construction for contract, utility or residential/commercial electrical firm
- Valid Georgia Driver's License
- High school education or GED
- One-year related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
