AltaSteel is seeking a detail-oriented and analytical Accountant to join our finance team. This role is responsible for the accurate recording, analysis, and reporting of financial transactions, with a focus on supporting operational efficiency and financial accuracy across the organization. The ideal candidate brings strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting, budgeting, and variance analysis.
While this is a general accounting position, it includes some involvement in inventory-related activities such as cost analysis and periodic inventory validation. The role also requires collaboration with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment with financial goals and operational strategies.
Approximately 25–30% of this role involves fieldwork within our on-site manufacturing plant facility, including physical inventory counts and reviews. Candidates should be comfortable putting on the provided PPE and going to the production environment. Additionally, the position requires flexibility during month-end and year-end close periods, which may involve extended hours to meet strict reporting deadlines.
- Record and classify financial transactions in accordance with accounting standards and internal policies.
- Prepare and analyze financial statements and reports to identify trends, variances, and areas for improvement.
- Assist with the preparation and management of budgets and forecasts.
- Support month-end and year-end close processes, including accruals, reconciliations, and journal entries.
- Perform variance analysis and support business units in understanding financial performance.
- Participate in physical inventory counts and assist with inventory reconciliation and validation.
- Evaluate inventory valuation, cost allocations, and related financial data for accuracy and completeness.
- Identify opportunities to streamline financial processes and improve operational efficiency.
- Collaborate with departments such as operations, supply chain, and procurement to align financial reporting with business activities.
- Maintain documentation and support internal/external audits as needed.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 3–5 years of experience in a financial accounting and analysis role.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel; ERP system experience required (Dynamics is an asset).
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Self-motivated and capable of working independently or as part of a team.
- Previous experience in manufacturing or inventory-based environments is considered an asset.
