Position Overview:
Reporting to the Controller and working under the direction of the Group Finance team, the Accountant is responsible for leading the daily accounting processes of the business, culminating in reliable and timely financial reporting. This position is responsible for establishing and maintaining processes for managing accounts payable and receivable, processing weekly payments, and reconciling cash and credit card accounts. The Accountant will also assist with the month-end close and the initial review of the completeness and accuracy of month-end transactions. Additionally, this role is responsible for processing bi-weekly payroll. The position requires strong organizational skills, a high level of accuracy, the ability to meet deadlines, and the capacity to take ownership of the accounting activities performed by the business.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform core accounting duties including bank deposits, bank and credit card reconciliations, weekly accounts payable and receivable, and maintaining processes to ensure a timely monthly financial close.
- Assist with month-end close procedures.
- Process payroll and maintain related administrative tasks; payroll will be reviewed by the Controller prior to submission.
- Manage the accounting email inbox, including responding to queries and capturing invoices.
- Ensure customer payments are accurately and promptly allocated to the correct accounts.
- Collect and reconcile credit card receipts and supporting documentation.
- Manage remote cheque deposits and process Electronic Fund Transfers (EFT) and Pre-Authorized Debit (PAD) transactions.
- Prepare a weekly payable listing for the Controller to review and approve; create corresponding payments in the banking platform for submission.
- Collaborate with the Office Administrator to reconcile invoicing and billing, ensuring all invoice batches are sent and align with the sales journal.
- Provide trusted support to the Controller by assisting with ad hoc accounting tasks as needed.
- Responsibilities will be divided across two companies: an operational company (approximately 80% workload) and a management company (approximately 20% workload).
- Perform other related duties as required or assigned.
- A degree in accounting, or a diploma in accounting with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
- Proven work experience in a hands-on accounting role, with strong knowledge of accounts payable, receivable, reconciliations, and payroll.
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel and QuickBooks Online.
- Experience with payroll processing is an asset.
- Familiarity with CRA regulations, Labour Standards, WCB, GST, EFT, and PAD transactions.
- High attention to detail, accuracy, and strong organizational skills.
- Ability to prioritize workload, meet deadlines, and continuously seek process improvements.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with a collaborative approach to teamwork.
- Familiarity with tools such as Scotia Connect and Navusoft is considered an asset.
- Experience in the waste management or a related industry is an advantage.
- Must be available to work full-time, in-person.
- Personal transportation is required, as the role involves travel between two office locations in Calgary.
