The purpose of the Yard Labourer is to be responsible for moving, binding, strapping and transporting bundles of fence posts and well as accurately determining the class and length of utility poles, and inspecting them to Quality Control standards. In addition the Yard Laborer will be responsible for manually removing excess bark as well as trimming poles to length with a chainsaw. The Yard Laborer is also available to assist the other employees with any physical tasks associated with the operation of the hydro pole and fence post yard and filling orders as determined by the supervisor.
- Picking and carrying fence posts: Moving fence posts from assembly line, sizing them, and placing them in designated areas.
- Counting pieces: Ensuring each bundle has the correct number of pieces.
- Strapping bundles: Using specified tools like strapper, crimper, and cutter to secure bundles with steel strapping.
- Using pallet jack: Transporting bundles to designated locations using a pallet jack.
- Operating de-barker/incisor: Operating equipment under supervision.
- Inspecting hydro poles for quality specifications.
- Stacking lumber: Ability to stack lumber as required.
- Using hand tools: Operating tools for drilling and handling poles including chainsaw.
- Performing maintenance: Conducting routine and preventive maintenance on mill equipment.
- Clean-up: Performing daily clean-up activities.
- Recordkeeping: Maintaining production paperwork and records daily.
- Maintaining workplace tidiness: Keeping work areas clean inside and outside buildings.
- Using chainsaws, peeler controls, and incisor controls.
- Ensuring workplace health and safety: Following safety protocols and keeping work areas free of hazards.
- Other duties: Performing additional tasks as assigned by supervisor.
- Working in saw/pole mill or industrial operations is an asset.
- Running and maintaining chainsaws.
- Operating heavy equipment.
- Physical endurance: Ability to work in a high-paced production environment requiring physical stamina.
- May occasionally lift and/or move 50 pounds or more.
- Quality control: Ability to assess and maintain quality standards.
- Safety: Recognizing and adhering to safe work practices.
- Chain saw experience.
- Equipment Operating experience.
- Able to follow WorkSafe guidelines and demonstrate safe work practices.
- Ability to keep accurate records and submit reports.
