Position Overview:
We’re looking for a dependable and hardworking Yard Laborer to join our team. This role focuses on purchasing, handling, sorting, and preparing metals (like steel, cast, stainless, aluminum, copper, brass, etc.) for processing and shipment. Key Responsibilities
•Identify and Sort Materials: Accurately identify, purchase and sort incoming nonferrous metals by type and grade using both visual identification and testing tools (such as magnets or spark tests).
•Maintain a high level of customer service: This role is responsible for providing customer service to customers bringing materials into the facility.
Requirements:
•Physical Ability: Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs, bend, kneel, stand, and walk for extended periods; work is mostly outdoors in varying weather conditions.
•Attention to Detail: Able to differentiate between types of metals (e.g., aluminum vs. stainless steel) and follow instructions for accurate sorting and grading.
•Work Ethic: Dependable, on-time, and ready to work hard every day. Must be able to work very independently and take initiative in a fast-paced yard environment.
•Team Player: Willingness to jump in and help wherever needed; good communication skills and positive attitude are a must.
•Safety-Focused: Must follow all company safety protocols and demonstrate awareness of surroundings in a busy, equipment-heavy yard.
•Process Materials: Clean, strip, or cut metals to remove contaminants (e.g., insulation, fittings, dirt) using hand tools, saws, or power tools.
•Weigh and Record: Assist with weighing materials and ensuring proper tagging, tracking, and documentation of sorted items.
•Operate Equipment: Use forklifts, pallet jacks, or material handlers safely to move and organize metal materials within the yard.
•Assist Customers: Help customers unload nonferrous metals and provide guidance on material sorting to improve efficiency and quality.
•Maintain Work Area: Keep the nonferrous yard clean and organized, ensuring safety pathways are clear and materials are stored properly.
•Safety Compliance: Follow all safety procedures, including proper lifting techniques and use of PPE (gloves, eye protection, etc.).
•Team Support: Communicate and work closely with coworkers, scale house staff, and management to ensure smooth yard operations.
Freon Recovery Certification:
Employees in this role are required to obtain their Freon recovery certification to recover refrigerants safely and legally from vehicles. This certification will need to be obtained with 3 months of employment. The company will provide guidance and support for obtaining this certification, including access to training materials and reimbursement for certification costs. A valid Freon recovery certification must be maintained throughout employment.
Qualifications:
•High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
•Experience in a scrap yard, automotive repair, dismantling, customer service or production environment is a plus but not required.
•Ability to operate or willingness to learn how to operate heavy machinery (e.g., forklift, wheel loader).
•Ability to work independently on tasks given.
•Basic mechanical knowledge and familiarity with tools and equipment.
•Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds, perform manual labor, and work primarily outdoors in various weather conditions.
•Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
•Commitment to workplace safety and environmental compliance.
