Professional Window Cleaner & Home Maintenance Technician
Technician: Window Cleaning & Home Maintenance
Overall Philosophy
Menaul Windows offers a pretty simple commodity: clean windows, roof, and gutters; pressure-washed surfaces; and, during the holiday season, festive lighting displays. This is the tangible thing that the customer gets from us. But what they’re really paying for is a feeling. Anyone who has ever had their windows cleaned knows how it feels to look through a crystal-clear pane of glass. Something about the clarity is uplifting; the outside world is literally brighter, and that brightness extends to our inner selves as well. Our customers sign an invoice for clean windows, but what they are actually paying for is this feel-good brightness and uplifting clarity that clean windows affords them.
As the owner and sole technician of Menaul Windows, I make it a point to exude an attitude and appearance that mirrors the uplifting clarity of a crystal-clear window. My customers are typically affluent people who value cleanliness and order; they are usually unable to do the work themselves (they may be older or too busy, or perhaps the job requires special equipment), so I take the responsibility of brightening their homes and their lives very seriously. Window washing is an age-old, humble trade. It is extremely rewarding to walk away from a house knowing that the customer will be seeing the world from a different, brighter perspective after I have done my job.
Required Skills:
All applicants must possess the following skills:
•Meticulous Attention to Detail
•From the technician’s clean & sharp physical appearance to the thoroughness of job completion (always immaculate), attention to detail is a must for this job.
•Job candidates must be willing to work in all kinds of weather; maneuver and climb ladders ranging from 2-40 feet; work on roofs; use power tools; etc.
•Candidates must value time management. They must arrive on time (or early) to the first job, and be efficient throughout the day so all jobs line up accurately.
•Ability to Maintain Composure in Stressful Situations
•Satisfying picky customers. Removing debris from clogged gutters that have not been maintained. Maneuvering a 40-foot ladder through overgrown bushes. These tasks can put a strain on a technician’s mental capacity. Qualified candidates have the confidence and composure to power through these tough situations.
•Ability to Problem Solve
•Qualified candidates approach challenges systematically, looking ahead and implementing a plan of attack.
•Personable & Friendly Attitude
•Technicians spend a lot of time in and around people’s homes. Candidates must be friendly, willing to make small talk, and able to know when conversation is appropriate.
•Willingness to Listen, Learn, and Give Feedback
•The job begins with a thorough training period. Candidates must be willing to listen and learn from the Operations Manager; they must also have the confidence to give feedback when appropriate.
Required Experience:
•No window-cleaning or home-maintenance experience is needed. The job will begin with a thorough training period, and every new hire will work side-by-side with the Operations Manager until they are fully prepared to work on their own. If the applicant does have window-cleaning or home-maintenance experience, they need to be willing to learn and/or adapt to the Menaul Windows philosophy.
Responsibilities:
All Technicians’ will sign the following Position Contract upon hiring:
•Maintain a clean and orderly appearance.
•The physical appearance of the technician is often the customer’s first impression of Menaul Windows. When the technician shows up at the door, it should be immediately obvious that he values the clarity and cleanliness the customer is paying for. If a disorderly or slovenly technician arrives to do the job, the customer will have a hard time believing in the product.
•Exude confident behavior.
•It is important that the customer knows their home will be taken care of by a responsible technician, whether it is the person currently on the job, or the Operations Manager (me). I do not expect a brand-new technician to know how to handle every challenge. However, I do expect that technicians know when to call me for assistance. Menaul Windows technicians can exude confidence because if they ever run into a challenge, they can call me, and I will either walk them through the solution, or come to the job to help. This is part of the Operations Manager’s job description, so technicians should never hesitate to take advantage of my expertise.
•Being on time shows the customer that we are organized and committed to the job. Most of our jobs are located in and around Seattle, which means that technicians need to leave extra time to arrive early or on the dot to each and every job. In the event that a technician is late, he should call the Operations Manager and/or customer to let them know.
•Read job plans daily & contact the Operations Manager with questions before the job begins.
•Menaul Windows uses BizScheduler as a customer database and scheduling platform. Every time I schedule a job, I record the work to be done and the estimated time and cost. Technicians should be familiar with the job details before arriving at the customer’s home. In addition, BizScheduler has a service history for every customer, which the technician should review before beginning the job.
•Complete a Technician’s Checklist and submit it to the Operations Manager after every job.
•The Technician’s Checklist has two purposes: First, it is an efficient way for a rookie technician to double check his own work and make sure he did not forget to complete a required task. Second, by checking off boxes and signing the Checklist, the technician is promising the Operations Manager that he completed every aspect of the job.
•After each job, the technician should add at least one note to the job plan. The note might be as simple as, “Job went smoothly.” Or, if there was a challenge (“Needed the 40-foot ladder,” “Don’t go in the office,” etc.), the technician should note it, so we can be better prepared the next time we work on the house.
•Clean van exterior (weekly) and interior (daily) and keep it organized.
•The Operations Manager will set aside time every week for the technician to clean the exterior of the van. This will be scheduled work time at “Home Base” (aka my house).
•Be friendly, connect with customers, and maintain relationships.
•One of the greatest aspects of working on people’s homes is the relationships I make with my customers. It is not uncommon to spend an entire day at one house; I might have a cup of coffee and lunch with a customer. I am always willing to make conversation as I work, if that seems appropriate. Over the past 19 years, I have cultivated relationships with customers who I now consider my friends. As Menaul Windows expands, new technicians will be working with some of those special customers. I expect new technicians to maintain the relationships I’ve built, and to begin building their own. Technicians should treat every customer as they would a friend. (And you might just walk away from the job with a plate of brownies or a slice of cake!)
•Check-in weekly with the operations team.
•For 19 years, I have been the sole owner/operator of Menaul Windows. As I begin to expand, I am very excited to hear my technicians’ thoughts and opinions on how we can improve the business. Informal weekly meetings (any excuse for a Caramel Mocha Frappuccino) will give us the opportunity to discuss improvements to operations. This is also a time when I can go over safety protocol, answer questions, and offer feedback on the technician’s progress.
