Please understand that a very high level of responsibility and accountability is required for this position. The Ambridge Water Authority provides water to over 30,000 customers via direct and indirect (bulk) sales. AWA WTP is responsible for purification of water for all of the aforementioned customers. All work of this class is to be performed in accordance with the established PA DEP procedures & standards in place, and by following the AWA WTP specific SOP’s in place, at all times.
The Water Utility Worker supports the operation and maintenance of the water distribution system. This role involves a combination of fieldwork, customer service, and teamwork to ensure safe, reliable water service. The position requires flexibility, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work in all conditions, both independently and as part of a team.
- Set up and maintain safe work zones during distribution system repairs and maintenance.
- Follow all safety protocols to ensure the safety of workers, customers, and the public.
- Communicate professionally with customers when responding to service calls, complaints, or inquiries.
- Provide updates and information regarding water service interruptions or repairs.
- Install, replace, and repair water meters, service lines, and distribution piping.
- Perform maintenance tasks, including leak detection, valve operation, hydrant maintenance, and related repairs.
- Operate hand tools and equipment necessary for distribution system work.
- Perform duties in a variety of weather conditions, from extreme heat to cold and wet environments.
- Adapt to both fast-paced emergency situations and slower routine maintenance tasks.
- Participate in a rotating on-call schedule; respond promptly to 24-hour emergency call-outs as required.
- Work effectively as part of the distribution team to complete projects.
- Demonstrate the ability to work independently and make sound decisions in the field.
- Perform grounds maintenance (e.g., cutting grass, maintaining right-of-ways).
- Maintain tools, vehicles, and equipment in good working condition.
- Complete daily work reports and documentation accurately and on time.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license (CDL preferred or ability to obtain).
- Ability to lift 50+ lbs and perform physical labor in outdoor environments.- Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
- Willingness to work flexible hours when needed.
- Prior water utility, plumbing, or construction experience is a plus but not required.
- Dependable, safety-conscious, and detail-oriented.
- Hands-on mechanical ability and comfort using tools.
