The Water Treatment Operator is responsible for the operation and maintenance of water treatment facilities in Bay City, MI. The operator ensures the safe and efficient treatment of water, meets regulatory standards, and provides quality drinking water to the community. The position requires knowledge of water treatment processes, equipment, and regulatory compliance.
- Water Treatment Operations:
- Operate and monitor water treatment plant equipment, including pumps, filters, and chemical dosing systems.
- Conduct regular tests on water quality (e.g., pH, turbidity, chlorine levels) to ensure it meets state and federal standards.
- Adjust treatment processes based on test results and operational needs.
- Troubleshoot and resolve equipment malfunctions and operational issues.
- Routine Maintenance & Inspections:
- Perform daily, weekly, and monthly inspections of water treatment plant equipment and systems.
- Maintain records of water treatment processes, chemical usage, and equipment performance.
- Perform minor repairs and preventative maintenance on equipment and facilities.
- Regulatory Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with state and federal water quality standards and reporting requirements.
- Prepare and submit required reports to state agencies, including water quality tests and plant performance logs.
- Stay informed about changes in environmental regulations and implement necessary adjustments in operations.
- Emergency Response:
- Respond to water treatment plant emergencies, including system failures or contamination incidents.
- Coordinate with other utility staff and emergency services to address urgent issues.
- Customer Service:
- Assist the public with water-related concerns or complaints, providing timely and accurate information.
- Work with other departments to resolve water quality issues.
- Record Keeping:
- Maintain files and records on treatment processes, maintenance logs, and safety protocols.
- Support administrative duties related to facility operations.
- Facility Cleanliness:
- Assist in maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the treatment plant, including the grounds and buildings.
- Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or equivalent. Some post-secondary education in water treatment or a related field preferred.
- Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in water treatment operations or a related field.
- Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid Michigan Driver’s License.
- Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of water treatment processes, including chemical dosing, filtration, and disinfection.
- Ability to use water quality testing equipment and interpret results.
- Strong mechanical aptitude for troubleshooting and maintaining equipment.
- Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work in confined spaces, high places, and outdoor environments in varying weather conditions.
- Manual dexterity and ability to operate various tools and equipment.
- Working Conditions:
- Occasional exposure to hazardous materials, chemicals, and fumes.
- Experience with SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems.
