Primary Duties

Position Summary:

The Water Treatment Operator operates and monitors treatment processes, optimizes system performance and conducts quality control testing to ensure the safe and efficient treatment of water. They will ensure water treatment is in compliance with applicable regulations to ensure clean, potable water for customers.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Monitor water treatment processes and conduct testing to ensure the production of an adequate quantity of high-quality drinking water that meets regulatory requirements and internal policies.

2. Monitor and interpret multi-variate information and make adjustments to processes and flows at each water treatment plant.

3. Conduct lab and field measurements to evaluate water quality parameters and document results to ensure compliance.

4. Collect and maintain samples and associated chains of custody for lab submission.

5. Respond to equipment failures, process upsets or other emergencies in order to minimize downtime, protect infrastructure and mitigate impacts on water quality or public health.

6. Report issues of non-compliance or deviations from critical control limits to supervisory team and take appropriate action as directed.

7. Inspect water treatment plant and facility equipment and notify appropriate stakeholders of issues or required repairs.

8. Ensure appropriate logs and documentation is completed at water treatment and water distribution facilities.

9. Act as the Operator in Charge (OIC) and ensure day to day operational requirements are executed.

10. Identify and propose improvements to the QMS, required repairs, equipment and infrastructure.

11. Comply with all health and safety requirements, maintain a safe work environment, report hazards and promote a culture of safety in the workplace.

Education, Certification and Other Qualifications Required

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

- Advanced knowledge of the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA)

- Advanced knowledge and proficiency with treatment unit processes, lab and sampling procedures and techniques

- Advanced knowledge of water treatment/distribution equipment and processes

- Ability to operate various tools and equipment in order to perform diagnostics and equipment repair

- Intermediate proficiency with SCADA/Instrumentation and Control Systems

- Intermediate communication skills

- Intermediate math skills and knowledge of hydraulics

- Intermediate knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety requirements as it relates to individual, organizational and operational requirements

- Intermediate MS365 skills

Qualifications:

- Post-secondary diploma in Environmental or Civil Engineering Technology or related discipline

- OIT or a Water Treatment Operator Certificate an asset

- Class G drivers’ license

Special Working Conditions/Conditions of Employment

- Applicant must be capable of walking, lifting and climbing and perform the physical demands of the position.

- Acquire and maintain the minimum licensing requirements in Water Treatment.

- Maintain a valid Class “G” driver’s license throughout employment.

- Must be reliable and able to work shift rotation, including night shift

- A criminal record check satisfactory to Utilities Kingston at the successful candidate's own expense
