Looking for a Lead Wastewater Operator for our Danville VA plant.

Class 3 wastewater license required, class 1 preferred. This position is for day shift.

This position is responsible for the overall operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant facility.

Duties and responsibilities

Develop and implement programs within organizational policies; report major activities to executive level administrators through conferences and reports

Supervise staff, including training and providing for technical or professional development, selecting or recommending selection, assigning and evaluating work, counseling, disciplining, and terminating or recommending termination
Plan activities for departmental staff and reprioritize throughout the day to resolve maintenance problems requiring immediate attention; ensure compliance with departmental safety regulations by staff
Oversee performance of the collection of samples and the performing of tests such as MLSS, pH, or DO; analyze result and make process control changes based on results
Document readings, test results, and equipment adjustments, and enter data into computer database for record maintenance and to produce periodic and special reports for designated state agencies
Monitor and observe treatment process for offensive matter; inspect equipment and monitor operating conditions, meters, and gauges to determine load requirements and detect malfunctions
Ensure plant operates as efficiently as possible while maintaining effluent discharge within permit limits set by the state
Develop and present departmental budget; oversees, reviews, and approves expenditures for area of responsibility; prepares financial forms and reports
Coordinate construction, repair and maintenance work with department heads, superintendents, citizens, and private contractors
Sets up and maintain record system; process daily paperwork including reports, memos, requisitions, and personnel information
Gather and maintain information/data to support periodic and special reports documenting activities for area of responsibility
Requires responsibility and opportunity for achieving moderate economies and/or preventing moderate losses through the management or handling of supplies of high value or moderate amounts of money
Requires decision-making as a major part of the job, affecting a major segment of the organization and the general public; works in a dynamic environment with responsibility for developing policies and practices
Attend or conduct staff and other professional meetings to exchange information; attend in-service training and technical or professional classes, seminars, or conferences to improve technical or professional skills
Attend safety classes, reinforce and comply with company safety policies
Work harmoniously with peers, supervisors, and the public and comply with company policies

Qualifications

Requires high school diploma or GED, and the equivalent of one year of college or specialized vocational training in chemistry, wastewater treatment, or a closely related field. Five years of Wastewater treatment operations experience and maximum certification as a Wastewater Operator preferred. Must have a valid state driver’s license and meet minimum driving standards.

Knowledge of:

Techniques, principles and practices of professional wastewater treatment plant operations
Techniques, principles and practices of laboratory analysis
Safety practices, procedures and equipment used


Skill in:

Handling or using machines, tools, equipment or work aids involving moderate latitude for judgment regarding attainment of a standard or in selecting appropriate items such as pumps, mixers, blowers, or laboratory equipment.


Ability to:

Understand and follow oral and written instructions
Prepare routine records and logs
Perform mathematical computations
Visually discern color variations
Work shift schedules and carryover into following shift if operator does not show up to work
Work emergency duty during non-scheduled work hours

Working conditions

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, bright and/or dim light, dust or pollen, intense noise levels, vibration, fumes or noxious odors. All required safety standards shall be adhered to mitigate risk from moving mechanical parts, electrical shock, heights, blood-borne pathogens, traffic, animals and wildlife, toxic or caustic chemicals, and other identified hazards.

Physical requirements

This position requires frequent standing, kneeling, bending and climbing. The employee must be able to use hands to operate and manipulate tools and equipment. This position requires very heavy physical exertion including the ability to lift over 50 pounds and exert over 100 pounds of force on a regular basis.

The employee must be willing to work non-standard and overtime hours as required.

The position requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing, and depth perception.
