The Opportunity
Join the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) as the next Vice President, Law & Associate General Counsel to deliver transformational changes, ensure high calibre legal support and strategic advice is provided to the AER and its staff, on sensitive and senior level matters. Assist the AER’s General Counsel on strategic, legal and governance issues and priorities for the organization. The AER’s Law branch is committed to providing legal and strategic advice that is timely, practical and delivery focused. As a senior leader of the organization this role requires a results-oriented leader and strategic thinker that is focused on supporting Law’s leadership team and the enterprise at large.
Reporting to the Executive Vice President (EVP), Law the ideal candidate will be a passionate leader willing to exercise sound judgement, lead with integrity, foster open communication while collaboratively working with other AER branches to achieve results. You will have in-depth knowledge of the energy industry, environmental matters, and landowner issues, which is critical to the Law branch’s success in effectively guiding the evolution of the Alberta Energy Regulator.

What your day-to-day will look like:•Lead Law branch operations to ensure high quality legal advice is provided to the enterprise.
•Directly oversee, support, and collaborate with the two Directors in the Law branch on day-to-day branch management issues. This includes employee issue management, team building, lawyer workload management, work prioritization, knowledge transfer & succession planning, providing oversight advice and direction on complex legal files and to external counsel.
•Work collaboratively with senior AER leadership to identify and resolve issues where Law branch support is required; maintain positive working relations with senior leadership of other AER branches; ensure branch and enterprise needs for legal support are effectively resourced.
•Assist the General Counsel/EVP, Law in executing various legal duties for the CEO, Board, and Executive Leadership Team. This includes providing legal and strategic advice for ministerial and governmental briefings, reviews, and audits of the AER by external bodies, the legislative and policy compliance and responses to media inquiries.
•Assist in the administration of all aspects of the Conflict of Interest and Whistleblower Policies, including overseeing staff training, investigations, and compliance.
•Act as a Statutory Decision Maker on procedural and regulatory matters.
•Consistently demonstrate the behaviours that align with AERs desired culture and leadership expectations.
•Encourage and reinforce a culture that fosters accountability and collaboration and creates cohesiveness across teams and the Law branch to achieve common goals and objectives.
What we’re looking for in you:
•A Law Degree or Juris Doctorate from a recognized university.
•Member in good standing of The Law Society of Alberta.
•15+ years of experience practicing law in at least two of the following areas: administrative/regulatory law, litigation/appeals, energy/environmental law, bankruptcy & insolvency/corporate law, aboriginal/constitutional law.
•10+ years of people leadership management with proven leadership skills, experience leading a team of lawyers.
•Excellent understanding of policy and regulatory requirements and associated risks.
•Excellent communication skills: ability to effectively communicate verbally and written to a diverse audience.
•Ability to prioritize and operate under tight deadlines.
•Experience with branch/department budgeting & forecasting.

•This role has a business requirement to work from Calgary, Alberta.
