Growing transportation company in the Northwest Region. With plants in Idaho, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, Oregon, California and Arizona, supplying a diverse product line of asphalts, polymer modified asphalts and asphalt emulsions to the road maintenance and construction industry. We are looking for an energized, flexible self-starter to fill a full-time opening for a Director of Transportation Safety & Compliance at our North Salt Lake, UT facility. This position reports to the General Manager of Transportation at our Idaho Falls, ID Corporate Office.
The Transportation Safety & Compliance Manager plans, directs, and implements organizational safety programs to ensure compliance with the following agencies: AZ/CA/CO/ID/MT/NV/OR/UT/WA/WY State Patrol, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Department of Toxic Substance Controls, Certified Unified Program Agencies, Department of Fish and Wildlife, US Coast Guard, State Land Commissions, California Air Resources Board, Occupational Safety and health Administration (OSHA) and California OSHA, and all other federal, state, and county regulatory agencies assigned the task of ensuring public safety.
- Conduct periodic internal reviews or audits to ensure compliance procedures are followed, and conduct or direct internal investigation of compliance issues.
- Protects assets by establishing compliance standards; anticipates emerging compliance trends designing improvement to internal control structure.
- Assess compliance or operations risks and develop risk management strategies. To avoid legal challenges enforce regulations, company policy, recommend new procedure, and comply with legal requirements.
- Develops safety and compliance organizational strategies by contributing information, analysis, and recommendations to strategic thinking and direction; establishing functional objectives in line with organizational objectives
- Develop, update, maintain, and implement workplace safety policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal OSHA rules and regulations.
- Inspects organization facilities to detect existing or potential accident and health hazards, determines corrective or preventative measures where indicated, implements risk management strategies and follows up to ensure measures have been implemented.
- Update and maintain written policies and procedures related to compliance activities.
- Leads investigation of accidents, incident, spills, and injuries and cooperates in the preparation of materials and evidence for organization use in hearings, lawsuits, and insurance investigation
- Develop, implement, and maintain driver qualification files, safety files and records, including maintenance of all training records.
- Reviews driver application and approves hiring of individuals seeking employment with the company whose duties involve driving company vehicles.
- Issues or directs other operational personnel in the progressive discipline procedures regarding employees found in violation of the FMCSA and Drug and Alcohol Programs.
- Stay current of the rules and regulations of government consisting of the federal, state, and local level. Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.
- Accomplishes compliance human resource strategies by determining accountabilities; communicating and enforcing values, policies, and procedures; implementing recruitment, selection, orientation, training, coaching, counseling, disciplinary, and communication programs; planning, monitoring, appraising, and reviewing job contributions; planning and reviewing compensation strategies.
- Will be required to perform other duties as requested, directed, or assigned.
- Five years of related experience/education/certification.
- One year of supervisory/lead experience
- OSHA, HAZWOP, Confined Space, Transportation HAZMAT, and Forklift certification preferred.
- Knowledge of state of federal regulation as it relates to motor carrier safety operating practices.
- Physically able to conduct inspections and carry equipment used for inspections.
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at a time.
