Job Title: Transmission/Distribution Substation Engineer Job Family Introduction
This position is responsible for implementing and coordinating the installation and energization of high voltage equipment associated with NIPSCO electric substations. This position aides in developing detailed substation designs, as well as provides broad construction support during execution. The incumbent will provide technical expertise to solve complex problems and apply leadership skills to project management, as well as offer quality oversight of work in electric T&D substation design. Incumbents are expected to have advanced engineering skills and to have the ability to work independently. This position will demonstrate sound collaboration with company personnel and peer departments, with timely technical input and economic evaluations; to assure safe, reliable, and technically balanced solutions to deliver power.
Electric Transmission/Distribution Substation Engineer Job Family Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Plan, estimate, design and manage complex electric substation projects according to company standards, sound engineering practices, and applicable codes. Prepare detailed drawings, permits, easements, bid specifications, material and labor estimates, and material reservations and all other documents required for project completion. Manage projects to completion and provide engineering direction.
- Provide technical support for the operations of all company and customer substations.
- Research, specify, order and coordinate material purchases and establish stocking levels of major transmission substation electrical equipment.
- Verify Substation Department’s methods and procedures are kept current with the latest and best industry safety requirements and engineering practices and codes.
- Receives input from Operations groups on performance of existing engineered facilities and systems.
- Evaluates, improves, and budgets future designs.
- Works internally with Transmission Planning, Transmission Line Engineering, Transmission Operations, Distribution Engineering and Operations, Technical Services, Substation Operations, Plant Operations, Major Accounts and Construction regarding the installation and maintenance of new and existing substation facilities.
- Interfaces and works with various interconnected companies, utilities, and entities such as INDOT, REMC, FERC, NERC, RFC, IURC, and Midwest ISO where appropriate.
Qualifications
Associate Engineer Required for Selection: Education- A graduate from a four year ABET accredited college or university program with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology.
- 0-12 months of relevant job experience
- Valid driver's license
- Demonstrated ability to work well in team environment
- Good oral communication, written communication, and interpersonal skills
- General engineering knowledge of voltage classes, current ratings, three phase power calculations, and basic power system operation
- Basic understanding of NESC, NFPA, IEEE, and OSHA codes and their applications
- Ability to complete cost estimates and order project material
- Ability to apply basic electrical and civil engineering principals and to recommend sound Electric Substation project solutions
- Ability to read and interpret engineering blueprints and single line diagrams
- Ability to apply established engineering procedures
- Basic knowledge of AutoCAD
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds
- A graduate from a four year ABET accredited college or university program with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology.

- Increased ability to use Substation Engineering Standards while working under less supervision.

- 3+ years of job relevant electric utility experience
- Proficient in completing complex-sized estimates and order various material of all types from SAP or direct suppliers
- Proficient understanding of Substation NESC codes and their usage.
- Ability to suggest substation redesigns in light of NESC code issues and/or violations and think out improved solutions to complex substation projects
- Proficient in using the Cascade Maintenance System.
- Proficient in various Substation Engineering Projects with limited support.
- Proficient in reading, interpreting, developing, and correcting various substation schematics and wiring diagrams.
- Proficient ability to use and improve upon existing Substation Engineering Standards
- Proficient ability to apply complex electrical engineering principles to recommend sound substation engineering solutions to nearly all types of substation engineering projects
- Ability to lead substation field and office meetings
- Significant ability to effectively complete complex multiple projects concurrently on schedule, with minimal supervision
- Exceptional communication and motivation skills to lead technical personnel and project managers
- Proficient ability to work with customers or contractors to explain solutions for complex technical issues
- Ability to assist less experienced subordinates for given projects or tasks
- Ability to interpret and applies organizational policy and recommends changes in engineering procedures
- Provides engineering direction on electric standards related initiatives, as well as electric system operation challenges
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) certification.

- Skilled in completing complex-sized estimates and order various stock and non-stock material of all types from SAP or external vendors. Ability to research and implement new materials outside of existing company standards.
- Skilled in developing substation engineering strategies for the largest and most complex substation engineering jobs
- Has a comprehensive mastery of Substation NESC codes and their usage.
- Skilled in the design, operation and maintenance of all voltage class substations.
- Has the comprehensive ability to suggest substation redesigns in light of NESC code issues and/or violations and think out safe, efficient, cost-saving solutions to complex substation projects
- Skilled in the comprehensive ability to read, interpret, and correct various electric schematics and wiring diagrams.
- Skilled in leading teams, projects and meetings with various stakeholders to achieve desired outcomes.
- An expert in basic practices of researching technical design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations. Must be proficient in the selection and application of proper engineering principles and techniques
- A comprehensive mastery of NESC codes and their applications related to substation design
- Experience working with local, state government, and special district organizations
- Must have good planning, organizational, verbal and written communications skills. Ability to perform duties effectively under emergency and contingency situations
- High level of knowledge in safe, reliable, and compliant electric transmission and power system operations and design
- Proficient ability to supervise, support, and guide employees and contractors in a technical environment
- Proficient ability to coach and develop employees, encourage teamwork, and motivate participation
- Possess strong PC skills for engineering, communications, reports, databases and spreadsheets
- Comprehensive ability to effectively complete complex multiple projects concurrently, with little or no supervision
- Has significant experience and ability to work with customers or contractors to solve complex technical issues and present the results

The successful candidate will be considered for one of the five levels listed below based off of experience.
SALARY INFORMATION Salary Range:- Associate Engineer: $67,900 - $101,900 USD Annual
- Engineer 1: $67,900 - $101,900 USD Annual
- Engineer 2: $79,800.00 - $119,600 USD Annual
- Engineer 3: $93,800 - $140,700 USD Annual
- Senior Engineer: $110,200 - $165,300 USD Annual
