AK&J Electric is looking for a Switchgear Technician with hands-on experience in testing, commissioning, and servicing electrical switchgear and control systems. The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of medium-voltage and low-voltage systems, be capable of working independently, and be willing to travel to job sites as needed.
Key Responsibilities:
•Provide technical support to Distributors, Direct Customers, Electrical & General Contractors, and internal AK&J Electric team members.
•Create and manage cases to track open issues, ensuring timely resolutions for all customer requests.
•Independently verify system operation, conduct operator training, and document all site visits (e.g., field start-ups, commissioning, system modifications, and preventative maintenance).
•Track and submit documentation corrections for revision control.
•Assist the engineering team in conducting and documenting factory testing and customer witness testing.
•Perform wiring checks to verify control power distribution and component operation using proper test equipment (0–125VDC & 0–13.2kVAC).
•Be proficient with PLC, HMI, and other component software programs for system setup, troubleshooting, and programming modifications.
•Verify correct operation of control components including PLCs, HMIs, metering, protective relays, and circuit breakers per contract documents.
•Verify operation of communication protocols including Ethernet (TCP/IP), RS232/485, Modbus, Modbus+, fiber, BACnet, and customer SCADA systems.
•Collaborate with distributors and third-party vendors to ensure operation of generators, ATSs, remote annunciators, and other related devices.
•Manage onsite vendors and activities to ensure successful startup and upgrades.
•Maintain thorough documentation including customer signoffs, trip reports, drawings, sequences of operation, component serial numbers, system setpoints, software/firmware versions, etc.
•Understand the functionality of all components within and connected to switchgear systems, including generators, voltage regulators, controllers, and ATS units.
•Analyze how various load types affect generator performance and adjust generator parameters for optimal synchronization and power sharing.
•Submit product feedback to the quality department to improve products and services.
•Provide constructive feedback on switchgear system design, PLC/HMI programming, circuit design, and system operation.
•Offer practical solutions to field issues and modify component programming as needed.
•Review all relevant documentation prior to site visits (e.g., submittals, schematics, manuals).
•Manage onsite expenses effectively.
•Mentor new associates and contribute to internal training efforts.
•Review and process warranty claims for switchgear systems.
•Assist in updating internal product and department procedures.
•Maintain working knowledge of applicable industry codes (e.g., NFPA 110).
•Complete daily tasks independently with minimal supervision.
Minimum Requirements:
•Associate’s or Technical Degree in Electrical or Electronics Technology or Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering is Plus.
•4+ years of hands-on experience with electrical switchgear, control panels, or field commissioning (low or medium voltage)
•Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and control logic
•Familiarity with basic electrical test equipment (multimeters, insulation resistance testers, Current Analyzer, Breaker Timing Test, Hi-Pot, etc.)
•Understanding of AC/DC theory, control circuits, and power distribution systems
•Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to job sites (local and out-of-state as required)
•Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision in the field
•Strong written and verbal communication skills for documentation and customer interaction
•Physically able to lift 50+ lbs, bend, crawl, and stand for extended periods
•Must be authorized to work in the United States
Job Type: Contract
Pay: $25.00 - $40.00 per hour
Expected hours: 20 – 40 per week
