Summary

The Chemistry Technical Supervisor oversees the administration and maintenance of the Chemistry Technical programs: Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) Primary Water Chemistry Guidelines; EPRI Secondary Water Chemistry Guidelines; EPRI Closed Cooling Water Chemistry Guidelines; EPRI Pressurized Water Reactor Primary-to-Secondary Leak Guidelines; Laboratory Quality Control; and Chemistry Program implementing procedures. Administers programs to ensure alignment with regulatory requirements, station goals and objectives, fiscal policy and established Chemistry programs and policies.


Minimum Requirements

A four-year Bachelor's Degree in Science, Engineering, Chemistry or other job-related field from an accredited college or university AND six (6) years of operational chemistry experience.

In lieu of Bachelor's Degree, Navy Nuclear Power Training, or college coursework and/or experience in Chemistry positions at a nuclear power plant equaling ten (10) years.

(Chemistry experience must include the application of chemistry, radiochemistry, radiological monitoring.)

Two (2) years' supervisory/management experience required.

(Meets or exceeds minimum education and experience requirements per Palo Verde Procedure 01DP-0EM08, Appendix A.)

Preferred Special Skills, Knowledge or Qualifications

Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interface with both internal and external customers.

Nuclear Requirements

Any PVNGS employee may be called upon to serve as a member of the Emergency Response Organization (ERO) and will be expected to fulfill their obligation as an ERO member.

Any PVNGS employee may be called upon to support a refueling or short-notice outage.

This includes line roles and responsibilities as necessary to execute outage activities.

These are conditions of employment at PVNGS.


Major Accountabilities

1) Plans, coordinates, and oversees the implementation and monitoring of chemistry technical support programs to limit or control system degradation to preserve and protect plant systems and components.

2) Maintains alignment with chemistry department requirements, standards, and expectations.

3) Works closely with other departments to ensure alignment with station priorities.

4) Implements action plans to achieve established department/station goals and objectives.

5) Evaluates and implements guidance to comply with the following: 10 CFR 50, Domestic Licensing of Production and Utilization Facilities, Current EPRI Primary Water Chemistry Guidelines, Secondary Water Chemistry Guidelines, Closed Cooling Water Chemistry Guidelines, and Pressurized Water Reactor Primary-to-Secondary Leak Guidelines, Updated Final Safety Analysis Report (UFSAR), Technical Specifications and Bases, Technical Requirements Manual and Bases, PVNGS Operations Quality Assurance Program Description (QAPD), Regulatory Guide 1.28 - Quality Assurance Program.

6) Oversees the preparation and reviews of monthly trending and metrics in accordance with EPRI and the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO) guidelines.

7) Evaluates and implements guidance from the EPRI Primary Water Chemistry Guidelines to ensure continued integrity of reactor coolant system (RCS) materials of construction and fuel cladding, establish satisfactory core performance and support the industry trend toward reduced radiation fields.

8) Oversees continuous monitoring and trending to make recommendations for reactor safety, fuel integrity of primary components, ALARA chemistry (controlling demineralizer usage and strategy).

9) Establishes short and long-term work priorities for the Chemistry technical staff to ensure maximum utilization of staff and resources.

10) Ensures adequate planning, coordination and in-depth reviews are performed using operational focus, good communications and working cross-organizationally.

11) Provides technical direction and support to ensure conformance to procedures, regulations and established codes and standards.

12) Monitors analytical chemistry/radiochemistry data.

13) Interfaces with chemistry operations for trend analysis and recommendations.

14) Directs necessary preventative/corrective actions.

15) Provides technical assistance and support related to chemistry issues by maintaining current and readily accessible plant chemistry data, system status and related records to support station operation.

16) Selects and develops a high performing team through effective coaching, performance management and feedback, recognition, training and developmental opportunities.

17) Provides guidance to technical staff for planning, technical analyses, overseeing methodologies and verifying conclusions.

18) Monitors expenditures to ensure costs are controlled within budgetary limitations.

19) Interfaces with Engineering and Operations to make corrective actions to mitigate any adverse conditions.

Plant/Field Role:

This position requires work to be performed in the field and/or at the work site, due to the nature of work.

Any PVGS employees may be called upon for random Fitness for Duty (FFD) testing during scheduled working hours. Employees, if off-site, must report to FFD at Palo Verde as soon as reasonably practicable, but no more than 120 minutes after being notified. Employees who are onsite when notified will have no more than 60 minutes to report after being notified.
