About This Job

Closing Date: September 25, 2025

Join Teck Alaska Incorporated, Red Dog Operations, one of the world’s largest producers of zinc concentrate. We are committed to encouraging a family-oriented work environment that values every team member. For many of our positions, we offer a unique rotation schedule with 2 weeks on-site followed by 2 weeks off-site, allowing you to enjoy quality time with your loved ones.

Partnership with NANA Regional Corporation: The mine operates on land owned by the NANA Regional Corporation, an Alaska Native corporation. This partnership ensures that the local Iñupiat community benefits from the mine’s operations, reflecting our dedication to community engagement and sustainable practices.

Embracing Courageous Safety Leadership (CSL): At Teck, safety is a core value central to our work culture. Through programs like CSL, we empower every employee to be a safety leader, encouraging a proactive approach to identifying and mitigating risks. As part of our team, you’ll contribute to sustaining this safety-first environment, where speaking up and driving positive change are not just encouraged but expected.

The Superintendent, Community and Indigenous Relations is a senior leadership role responsible for shaping and executing Red Dog’s Indigenous and community engagement strategy. Reporting to the Manager, Community and Public Relations, this position plays a critical role in fostering respectful, long-term partnerships with the Iñupiat communities of Northwest Alaska.

The Superintendent leads a team of community relations professionals, manages a significant departmental budget, and acts as the department’s second-in-command. A key focus of the role is building internal capacity by coaching and mentoring senior Iñupiat staff, with a strong emphasis on succession planning and long-term leadership development.

This role requires a deep understanding of Indigenous rights, stakeholder engagement, and the social dynamics of remote and culturally distinct regions. The successful candidate will navigate complex social environments to support sustainable project outcomes, uphold company commitments, and contribute to the operating stability of Red Dog Operations.

Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership and Relationship Management

- Lead the Indigenous and Community Relations (CR) strategy, ensuring alignment with Indigenous rights, regulatory obligations, and corporate sustainability goals.

- Represent the company in high-level engagements with Indigenous governments and community leaders, fostering long-term, trust-based partnerships.

- Oversee engagement planning for Red Dog Operations, ensuring cultural appropriateness and community inclusion.

Governance, Agreements, and Compliance

- Manage the implementation of Indigenous Agreement commitments.

- Oversee the community grievance mechanism, ensuring accessibility, responsiveness, and fairness.

- Operational Integration and Social Risk

- Collaborate with internal teams/departments to integrate Indigenous and community perspectives into permitting, planning, and operations.

- Monitor and respond to social risks and community impacts using qualitative data and field insights.

Leadership Development and Succession Planning

- Provide leadership to the CR team, setting clear expectations and promoting accountability.

- Coach and mentor senior Iñupiat staff, with a strong focus on professional development and succession into leadership roles.

- Develop structured growth plans and hands-on learning opportunities to build leadership capacity.

Engagement Delivery and Stakeholder Communication

- Oversee scheduling and execution of engagement activities aligned with project timelines and community priorities.

- Maintain engagement records and ensure regular, transparent communication with community members and leaders.

Reporting and Insight

- Deliver concise, strategic reports to internal leadership on community sentiment, key issues, and engagement outcomes.

- Use community data and observations to support planning and risk mitigation.

External Partnerships

- Build collaborative relationships with Indigenous organizations, NGOs, and regional stakeholders to support shared goals.

- Support broader sustainability and external relations efforts across Red Dog Operations.

Departmental Oversight

- Manage CR budget, KPIs, and internal systems to support operational effectiveness.

- Serve as acting department lead during the Manager’s absence, ensuring continuity and senior representation.

Qualifications:

- Bachelor's degree in Indigenous Studies, Social Sciences, Public Policy, or a related field; a Master's degree is preferred

- Minimum of twelve (12) years of progressive experience in Indigenous Relations, Stakeholder Engagement, or Social Performance, preferably within the mining, natural resources, or infrastructure sectors

- Minimum of five (5) years supervisory experience, preferably in leading advanced community relations or related disciplines

- Proven success in developing and managing high-impact Indigenous partnerships and stakeholder engagement programs

- Strong understanding of Indigenous rights, regulatory frameworks (local, national, and international), and community development principles

- Demonstrated experience and ability to lead and supervise multidisciplinary teams, manage complex budgets, and deliver measurable outcomes

- Experience in remote or Arctic Indigenous contexts considered a significant asset
