Your summer will begin on Monday, June 15, 2026, and will be filled with meaningful work experiences, professional development, networking opportunities, community involvement, and most importantly, have fun!

Available Roles

Digital Substation Standards & Support (Northboro, MA)

Our Digital Substation Standards & Support team is responsible for the capital project delivery of digital substations, the development of IEC 61850-related protection and control standards, and providing support and training for our engineering, operations, and other departments. This team plays a crucial role in advancing the Company's vision of developing intelligent transmission and distribution networks while promoting the adoption of digital infrastructure.

As a Gridtern in the Digital Substation Standards & Support group, you will engage in equipment testing in the laboratory and support the development of IEC 61850 protection and control standards. Your responsibilities will also include computer programming, technical writing, and assisting with various project engineering tasks. This internship will provide you with hands-on experience in digital substations and the opportunity to contribute to innovative projects that enhance the efficiency and reliability of our energy infrastructure.


Meter Engineering NE (Worcester, MA)

Our Meter Engineering NE team is responsible for providing wholesale and retail metering support across New England, focusing on ensuring effective operations related to metering assets through engineering knowledge and expertise. The team also supports Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) deployment, DPU20-75, grid modernization, and both capital and Operations & Maintenance projects.

As a Gridtern, you will be involved in landline-connected meter replacements and capital projects, providing technical support for AMI Acceptable Quality Level testing in the Worcester meter shop. Additionally, you will assist in the development of the Engineering SharePoint site. This internship offers valuable experience in metering engineering and the opportunity to contribute to important projects within the energy sector.

Protection Engineering-NE (Northboro, MA)

Our Protection Engineering Department is responsible for ensuring the safety, reliability, and stability of electrical power systems. This involves designing and implementing protective systems that detect and isolate faults to prevent equipment damage and service interruptions. Key responsibilities include developing protection schemes for substations, transmission lines, and transformers, conducting coordination studies, preparing relay settings, and supporting commissioning and troubleshooting activities.

As a Gridtern, you will conduct relay coordination studies and arc flash calculations, as well as develop protection scope documents for small projects and create relay settings. This internship will provide you with valuable experience in protection engineering and contribute to the safety and reliability of electrical power systems.

Distribution Planning & Asset Management (Hopedale, MA)

Our Distribution Asset Management and Engineering Group is a crucial part of the Electric Asset Management & Engineering team across the National Grid footprint. This team is dedicated to using advanced technology to upgrade and improve aging infrastructure while incorporating smart technologies. Their mission-critical work provides opportunities to engage in a variety of projects, promoting a self-directed and empowered team culture that values accountability in their roles.

As a Gridtern, you will evaluate co-generation interconnection requests to assess their impact on the distribution system and develop connection plans. You will also assist in investigating complex customer voltage complaints and resolving issues related to fault duty calculations, stray voltage, power quality, and motor starts. Providing technical support for new service connections is a key responsibility, including reviewing new customer loads of 200 kVA or greater, determining appropriate feeders, consulting with Capacity Planning, and advising the Design team on construction options affecting reliability. Additionally, you will conduct annual engineering reliability reviews on Poor & Problem circuits and sponsor non-complex discretionary projects.

New England Distribution Design (Hopedale/Worcester, MA)

Our New England Distribution Design team is responsible for designing and engineering electric distribution capital projects while providing oversight for engineering contractor services (MSA). This role ensures that the engineering and design of all electric capital work aligns with National Grid's fiscal work plan.

As a Gridtern, you will work on various electrical distribution projects and support all engineering functions. You will collaborate with the Distribution Planning & Asset Management (DPAM), overhead lines, underground lines, substation, and Relay/Telco (RTOG) groups to produce buildable work that supports the fiscal work plan. This internship will provide you with valuable experience in electric distribution engineering and project management.


What You’ll Need

- Availability to start on the program start date, June 15, 2026, and work full-time (40 hours a week) for the duration of the summer

- Must be registered as a full-time student and continue your education full-time through the Fall 2026 semester

- Pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree

- Majoring in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Power Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering or Civil Engineering

- Have accumulated 18 or more credits and be at least 18 years of age

- Possess work authorization that does not now or in the future require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the United States (including CPT & OPT)

- Some Gridtern positions will require a valid US Driver’s license with a safe driving history that complies with National Grid’s Safe Driver policy. This qualification will be specified in the department specific Gridtern role(s) descriptions at point of interview

Salary Range

$24.00-$33.00 an hour

Candidates will be assessed and provided offers based on major, degree type, and class year. Our Gridtern Program does not offer relocation, housing assistance, or public transportation reimbursement for Gridterns; however, we can provide a list of resources to utilize in making your arrangements.

Please note that as a Gridtern, you must reside within our existing footprint, which includes Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island, and Vermont. You must also reside within a reasonable, commutable distance to your assigned primary office.
