The Substation Engineer performs engineering work with a focus on substation engineering design including both physical and protection & control practices. The Engineer is responsible for the design, construction, maintenance, and troubleshooting of electrical substations. This includes planning and implementing projects related to substation infrastructure, ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
o Develop detailed engineering designs for new substations or modifications to existing ones.
o Create layout drawings, schematics, and specifications for substation equipment.
o Conducts project design and cost alternative studies, field inspections, and prepares associated reports.
o Manage and oversee substation construction projects from conception to completion.
o Coordinate with cross-functional teams, including electrical designers, technicians, and project managers.
o Prepares plans, layouts, design calculations and related engineering design in accordance with applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations. Including Electrical Power Calculations.
o Performs project engineering and project management functions for assigned projects.
o Specify and select appropriate substation equipment such as transformers, circuit breakers, relays, and switchgear.
o Ensure equipment meets industry standards and project requirements.
o Stay current with industry codes, standards, and regulations related to substations.
o Ensure all designs and projects comply with applicable safety and environmental standards.
o Plan and conduct testing and commissioning activities for substation equipment.
o Identify and resolve any issues during the commissioning process.
o Develop maintenance procedures and schedules for substation equipment.
o Diagnose and troubleshoot issues with substation components, recommending and implementing solutions.
o Implement and enforce safety protocols and procedures in the design, construction, and maintenance of substations.
o Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation related to substation designs, projects, and maintenance activities.
o Prepares and manages cost estimates, budgets, schedules, material and construction specifications and construction contracts for projects assigned.
o Work within a project team to create all design documents and drawings for a project, including creating wiring diagrams from schematics, generating bills of materials, and applying field mark-ups of project as-built drawings with minimal supervision.
o Identify opportunities for process improvement and efficiency in substation design and maintenance.
o Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related field.
o Professional Engineer (PE) license is often preferred.
o Relevant experience in substation design, construction, and maintenance.
o Experience in the design of additions, modifications, extensions, upgrades and rearrangements of company generation, transmission, substation, and communication and control systems and facilities.
o Proficiency in relevant engineering software and tools.
o Strong knowledge of electrical engineering principles and practices.
o Knowledge of substation systems from 34.5kV to 500kV with familiarity with basic principles related to the engineering design or high voltage substations.
o Application of National Electrical Safety Code to the Design Processes
o Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
