Purpose
To provide temporary assistance to the Water & Wastewater Department with GIS data collection in the field and to provide the student with a quality summer work experience in water distribution and GIS.
Job Description
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
•Locate, verify and identify water facilities and appurtenances in the field using paper and electronic system maps.
•Utilize GPS equipment to collect various asset data in the field to inform condition assessment, operations & maintenance and capital project planning.
•Create and edit GIS features and attributes.
•Work with Water & Wastewater Technicians to identify and report required map updates.
•Responsible for use, care and security of tools, vehicles, equipment and materials utilized.
•Perform work with a high level of accuracy and professionalism.
•Must have the ability to work as a member of a team and independently.
•Drive and/or operate vehicles and equipment as required.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
•Complete paperwork associated with job functions in a neat and timely manner.
•Report any hazards or damage observed to District facilities to supervisor.
•Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
•Must learn to locate and identify mains, distribution lines, pipes, meters, hydrants, and valves.
•Must learn to work from maps, GPS devices, paper maps, specifications and sketches.

+ Must become knowledgeable of District record-keeping methods and procedures such as time sheets, etc.

Education, Experience and Training:
•Experience with water or wastewater systems and associated equipment and materials, including computers and GPS/GIS equipment preferred.
•Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
•Must be a student enrolled in a post-secondary education program.
•Experience in the operation of District (or similar) vehicles and equipment preferred.
Other Requirements:
•Must pass a District physical examination and be able to perform essential job functions.
•Must wear and utilize personal protective equipment as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
•The job functions will be performed in indoor and outdoor environments, subject to adverse weather conditions and noise.
•Some job functions will be done in areas covered by brush and trees or in trenches and where footing is poor and the ground uneven and/or water soaked.
•Job functions around traffic or mechanized equipment will present the need for alertness and safety awareness.
•The job functions include working with persons who exhibit many types of personalities and behaviors.
•Job functions require work on ladders, structures and equipment.
•May encounter the need to work near hazardous materials.
•The job involves working in areas where animals/livestock may be present.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
•The work requires the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
•The work requires the ability to operate equipment and vehicles.
•The work requires the ability to work in limited light; and to differentiate among colors.
•The work requires the ability to answer questions and communicate with coworkers, customers, and others in person on cellular phones via email.
•Work activities involve combinations of walking, kneeling, pushing, pulling, climbing, bending, lifting and carrying and standing for extended periods.
EQUIPMENT AND VEHICLES:
•The job requires driving and operating vehicles such as an automobile, pickup truck, van, or truck.
•The job requires use of GPS surveying equipment and its interface with GIS.
•Work practices may necessitate the use of different equipment, vehicles and tools.
