ISO New England is the independent system operator responsible for ensuring the safe and reliable flow of electricity in our region and planning for the future of the electric grid. We are at the forefront of New England’s ongoing transition to clean energy.
Internship Title- Interconnection Services & Resource Qualifications Intern
Department – Load Forecasting
Minimum Education level: Junior
Preferred Majors: Electrical Engineering
The future grid needs new clean energy resources—and you can help bring them online. As an Interconnection Service intern, you’ll assist engineers with studies that determine how new solar, wind, and battery projects can connect to the transmission system. You’ll analyze data, explore modeling methods, and learn to use the same tools engineers rely on to plan the grid. This is a great role for students interested in applying power system coursework to one of the most important engineering challenges of our time.
Who we are
ISO New England is one of the most pivotal energy companies you’ve probably never heard of. Our job is to oversee the 24/7 operation of the power grid that covers the six states of New England and to administer the region’s $10+ billion “stock exchange” for buying and selling of wholesale electricity. Our work ensures that over 14 million people can reliably turn their lights on and complete their jobs, take care of their families, and live in comfort with convenience.
About the Department
The Transmission Service Studies Group performs power flow, stability, and short-circuit studies to determine the transmission system upgrades required for the interconnection of new generation resources to the New England grid. The department plays a key role in ensuring the future power system remains reliable while enabling the integration of significant amounts of new clean energy resources to help achieve the region’s carbon reduction goals.
What You’ll Be Working On
As an Interconnection Service & Resource Qualifications Intern, you will:
- Support Transmission Service Studies Group engineers and consultants in managing study input and output data.
- Assist in performing and analyzing power system studies, including power flow, stability, and short-circuit simulations.
- Investigate methodologies for modeling renewable energy resources, especially those connected at lower transmission voltage levels.
- Contribute to the evaluation of interconnection requests and resource qualification processes.
How You’ll Make an Impact
You’ll play a key role in helping new clean energy projects connect to the grid. By supporting power flow, stability, and short-circuit studies, your work will directly impact how renewable resources get integrated into New England’s energy future.
Required Qualifications
- Enrollment in a bachelor’s or graduate program in electrical engineering.
- Completed coursework in power systems preferred.
- Strong analytical and organizational skills.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
What You’ll Gain
This internship provides exposure to the interconnection and resource qualification processes that are vital to New England’s energy transition. You will:
- Gain experience using industry-standard power system analysis software.
- Learn to manage and interpret complex modeling data.
- Apply engineering theory to real-world system studies that support the addition of renewable resources to the grid.
- Develop technical and professional skills while working alongside experienced transmission and interconnection engineers.
Why Join ISO New England?
ISO New England is responsible for operating the region’s bulk power system and leading its transition to clean energy.
