Description:
Perform an essential role in substation design, preparing specifications, managing administrative functions, or conducting field engineering related to assigned projects under the supervision of the incumbent’s immediate supervisor or another designated professional engineer. The incumbent must be adept at operating various power system design software tools necessary for carrying out the design and engineering tasks linked to electrical utilities substation facilities. Furthermore, the incumbent must have a solid understanding of basic and complex issues related to substation structures, components, cable and conduit systems, grounding systems, shielding methodologies, terminologies, and techniques required for developing construction documentation for the assigned project.
1. Design of engineered systems with the most enormous scale and utmost complexity. Activities shall include, but not be limited to, the following:
•Preliminary design and budget estimates.
•Detailed designs and estimates.
•Equipment specifications, proposal evaluations, and requisitioning.
•Engineering calculations to ensure the safety and performance of equipment and systems.
•Acquire on-site measurements and other data to achieve the design or to monitor and evaluate plant performance.
•Coordinate equipment delivery and design engineering to align with construction schedules.
•Review completed work to ensure the adequacy of design and documentation.
2. Monitor the project's construction activities to ensure compliance with plans and specifications. Activities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
•Act as Resident Engineer on projects of any magnitude.
•Interpret complex plans and specifications and apply available information to satisfy all project design requirements.
•Stay updated on relevant engineering and construction codes and ensure compliance with all regulations.
•Prepare and monitor complex construction schedules to ensure the timely completion of the work.
•Institute and implement changes to the work when required by varying site conditions.
•Performed on-site design or investigative work to ensure the contractor’s construction methods were sufficient.
•Review, assess, and authorize contractors’ invoices.
•Receive and inspect the equipment to be installed on the project and approve it for payment.
•Conduct thorough economic analyses of alternative engineering.
•Prepare reports and feasibility studies for management submission.
•Act as the project engineer or project manager for assigned projects.
•Encourage efficient information flow and maintain thorough and accurate record-keeping.
•Become acquainted with the Client/Company’s drawing system, design and construction standards, and applicable industry codes and practices.
•Will stay updated on current developments in the area of responsibility.
•May support department personnel's professional development, training, and evaluation.
•Complete additional duties as assigned.
•Work independently according to the general instructions, directions, or objectives the Project Manager or Supervisor provides.
•Supervise staff designers, CADD technicians, and field personnel directly.
•Must possess strong technical and engineering design/planning skills and computer and financial/project management skills.
•Participates in marketing to clients and projects, identifying new opportunities and maintaining client relationships.
•Prepare and review written reports that outline the purpose, methodology, data requirements, recommendations, and observations of power system engineering studies.
•Ability to analyze results and draw conclusions about the problems being studied.
•Maintains a personal study program to enhance and develop technical and analytical skills.
•Keep supervision updated on the status of all projects with pre-established expectations.
•Capability to work both independently and collaboratively, while demonstrating a high degree of initiative and self-motivation.
•Serve as the Resident Engineer on projects of any scale.
•Interpret intricate plans and specifications, applying available information to meet all project design requirements.
•Stay familiar with relevant engineering and construction codes, and ensure compliance with all regulations.
•Prepare and monitor complex construction schedules to ensure the timely completion of the work.
•Conduct on-site design or investigation work to ensure the contractor’s methods are adequate.
•Physical substation design includes yard layouts, plans, sections, details, grounding, lightning protection, control building arrangements, interior and exterior raceways, auxiliary AC/DC power systems, and associated bills of material.
•Supervise staff designers directly.
•Prepare calculations for studies and reports (grounding, lightning protection/DC load studies, etc.)
•Coordinate design activities with other departments (Civil/Structural, Transmission Line, etc.)
•Create scopes of work, conceptual designs, and execution plans.
•Prepare estimates for engineering costs and man-hours, along with schedules.
•Capable of interpreting complex plans and specifications and applying available information to ensure all project design requirements are fulfilled.
•Ability to develop proposals, including a scope of work that details the established goals and objectives and clearly defines the deliveries and schedule for the job.
•Design various substation systems with differing sizes and complexities under the guidance of the incumbent's supervisor.
•Conducting or overseeing a quality review of all aspects of substation design.
•Leading a team of single or multi-disciplinary professionals to ensure project success.
•Train and mentor less experienced engineers in their technical and professional growth.
Position Requirements:
•Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems preferred) or in a related field from an accredited university.
•Professional engineering license required.
•7 - 10 years of experience in engineering of related projects.
•Strong understanding and knowledge of industry and national codes and standards, including but not limited to NESC and NFPA 70 (NEC), IEEE standards, and other applicable standards on substation design.
•Experience with system design software, CADD, and Microsoft Office products is required.
•Strong analytical and management skills
•Experience with ground grid design of substations.
•Experience with power systems software packages such as Cape, Aspen One-liner, CDEGS, Wing IS, SKM, ETAP, and others is strongly desired.
•Willingness to travel for site surveys, project scope walks, and meetings.
