One Permanent - Remote (US Only) - Full Time Position.
The Senior Originator, Balanced Energy Solutions will play a critical role in a newly formed business unit called Balanced Energy Solutions, operating in the U.S. and Canadian power and technology markets. This strategic role is designed for an experienced professional who will lead business development and origination efforts to support the growth of energy solutions for data centers and other end use power customers. The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in power markets and customer engagement to identify, originate, and close complex deals that align with customer needs and Capital Power objectives. The role will report to the Vice President, Balanced Energy Solutions.
You will contribute to our team by:
- Proactively reach out to data center customers, including hyperscalers and co-location providers, to assess power capacity needs and fit with Capital Power’s offerings.
- Develop site narratives and pitches for M&A, brownfield, and greenfield development opportunities, ensuring strategic fit and readiness for potential data center customers and fit within Capital Power’s portfolio.
- Lead business development efforts by identifying and pursuing new opportunities for growth, structuring deals and proposals that align with customer needs, company objectives, and regulatory requirements.
- Conduct market research and competitive analysis to inform pricing strategies, proposals, and business development efforts.
- Initiate and cultivate relationships with potential customers, setting up key introductions and positioning Capital Power as a trusted energy solutions provider.
- Provide strategic guidance on regulatory requirements, risks, and market dynamics, serving as a key resource in responding to customer questions.
- Ensure effective collaboration with internal Capital Power teams, including Commercial, Operations, and Engineering, to address customer questions.
- Develop pricing strategies with Capital Power’s trading and finance teams to maximize profitability, including designing multiple pricing perspectives to identify optimal negotiation windows based on customer willingness to pay, internal return expectations, and market benchmarks.
- Structure contract terms, including LOI Term Sheets and PPA agreements, to establish clear terms before entering negotiations.
- Support negotiations for complex agreements, ensuring contract terms meet revenue goals.
- Ensure effective collaboration with internal teams, including Trading, Finance, Commercial, and Engineering, to develop terms for power capacity commitments, in-service dates, liquidity damages, cost pass-throughs, and other deal components.
- Develop comprehensive proposals, presentations, and business cases for potential customer deals to bring alignment across senior leadership.
- Provide guidance and inputs to internal valuation teams based on expected deal terms, customer feedback, and estimated deal profitability to optimize deal structures and pricing strategies.
- Monitor industry trends in technology and sustainability, ensuring scalable and environmentally responsible offerings.
- Collaborate with risk and legal teams to assess and mitigate financial, operational, and regulatory risks for each deal.What you will bring to the role:
- Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, economics, engineering, or a related field; an advanced degree (MBA, MSc) is as asset.
- 10+ years in energy origination, contract structuring, negotiations, and execution in power marketing.
- Deep understanding of U.S. and Canadian power markets (ISO/RTO, regulated) and experience with PPAs and commercial agreements.
- Experience building and maintaining contacts with hyperscalers, data center co-locators, and utilities throughout North America.
- Proven success in closing complex, high-value deals aligned with revenue and growth targets.
- Skilled in structuring and negotiating complex agreements, securing favorable terms.
- Proficient in financial modeling and pricing for profitability in large-scale deals.
- Knowledgeable about U.S. and Canadian regulatory requirements, both in unregulated and regulated markets.
- Strong communicator, skilled in persuasive pitches and clear proposal development.
- Flexible, forward-thinking, and committed to customer-focused, sustainable solutions.
- Remote considered in US Only, Hybrid available for Phoenix and Washington DC, with moderate travel to meet business users at Capital Power facilities or other office.
