Solid Waste Superintendent -Gary Stormwater Management District
The Solid Waste Superintendent supervises daily operations of trash collection crews to ensure efficient and safe solid waste removal. This position oversees routes, assigns work, monitors employee performance, and ensures compliance with safety standards, policies, and procedures.
Salary: $55,000.00
Key Responsibilities:
•Assigns daily routes and tasks to trash truck drivers and trash collectors.
•Monitors field operations to ensure timely and complete collection of refuse from residential, commercial, and municipal locations.
•Trains, supervises, and evaluates assigned staff; provides guidance on proper lifting, loading, and driving techniques.
•Conducts inspections of equipment, vehicles, and collection points to ensure compliance with safety and sanitation standards.
•Responds to complaints, service requests, and emergencies; coordinates with Fleet Manager to resolve issues.
•Completes daily work logs, attendance records, incident reports, and vehicle inspection reports.
•Coordinates with the maintenance department to schedule vehicle repairs and preventive maintenance.
•Assists in preparing operational reports and recommends improvements to collection procedures.
•Enforces adherence to safety regulations and district policies.
•Performs related duties assigned.

Requirements and Qualifications:
Education:
•High school diploma or GED required.
Certification:
•Possession of a valid CDL Class B operators’ license and demonstrated safe driving record.; CDL Class A accepted. pg. 2
Skills and Experience:
•Minimum of three (3) years of experience in solid waste collection, including one (1) year in a lead or supervisory role.
•Knowledge of sanitation equipment, collection routes, safety procedures, and basic supervisory practices.
•Ability to occasionally assist work crews in performance of duties, including operating various equipment, and assisting at transfer station.
•Working knowledge of shop mechanics and the ability to perform necessary inspections and maintenance of department vehicles and equipment.
•Ability to apply knowledge of people and locations and read/interpret detailed blueprints, specifications, layouts, and maps. Physical Demand and Work Environment: • Ability to work in adverse weather and physically demanding conditions.
•Requires walking, standing, lifting (up to 75lbs), and operation of equipment.
•Work is performed outdoors and in vehicles, often in varying weather conditions
•Ability to serve on-call and respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis.
•May require occasional evening or weekend work to accommodate district operations.
