Position Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Senior Structural Engineer with a specific focus on high-voltage substations and electrical infrastructure. This individual will be responsible for managing and executing structural scopes for substation projects from concept through IFC, including design of foundations for control enclosures, transformers, breakers, dead-ends, and other major HV equipment.
This role requires a strong familiarity with structural requirements unique to substations, including coordination with electrical teams, vendor specifications, foundation optimization, and document production aligned with milestone submittals. You'll play a key role in shaping and scaling our HV structural team and supporting utility and interconnection projects for renewable energy clients.
Key Responsibilities:
Technical Leadership & Oversight:
•Lead structural engineering efforts for utility substation projects including control enclosures, transformer foundations, dead-end structures, capacitor banks, and static masts
•Review project documents and develop structural Basis of Design (BOD), including loads, design codes, geotechnical inputs, and material assumptions
•Design and size shallow and deep foundations (e.g., spread footings, drilled piers, embedded posts) based on geotechnical recommendations and equipment loads
•Perform load calculations (dead, live, wind, seismic) and develop structural models using accepted FEA tools (e.g., RISA, RAM, STAAD)
•Coordinate with geotechnical engineers to integrate foundation performance assumptions and loading capacities (e.g., LPILE, MFAD inputs)
•Prepare structural drawings, elevations, details, and specifications using AutoCAD and/or Revit for each milestone (30%, 60%, 90%, IFC)
Client & Vendor Coordination:
•Coordinate with electrical engineers, control enclosure vendors, transformer manufacturers, and structure suppliers to obtain and interpret structural performance requirements
•Support client-facing meetings to present a design approach and resolve technical comments
•Review vendor-supplied structural performance requirements and incorporate into foundation and anchorage design
•Respond to RFIs and submittals related to structural foundations, design assumptions, and special inspections
Other Areas of Focus:
•Provide input on internal design standards, templates, and QA/QC processes for substation projects
•Assist in developing resource plans, scopes, and estimates for future HV structural projects
•Serve as a technical mentor to junior structural engineers working on electrical infrastructure
•Collaborate with civil and geotechnical teams to ensure fully integrated substation site design
•Stay current on relevant codes (IBC, ASCE 7, NESC, etc.), utility standards, and AHJ requirements
Qualifications:
•Professional Engineer (PE) license (required)
•Bachelor’s degree in civil or Structural Engineering (Master’s preferred)
•8+ years of structural engineering experience, including at least 3–5 years specifically supporting high voltage substations or transmission infrastructure
•Proficiency with structural design software (e.g., RISA, RAM, STAAD, or equivalent FEA tools)
•Proficient in AutoCAD; Revit experience a plus
•Strong understanding of applicable codes and standards (IBC, ASCE 7, NESC, IEEE, utility-specific structural criteria)
•Experience with interpretation of geotechnical reports and integration of foundation parameters (bearing capacity, LPILE, corrosion, etc.)
•Excellent communication, coordination, and client-facing skills
•Willingness to travel occasionally for field visits, site walkdowns, or client meetings (approx. 5–10%)
