Solar Utility O&M

5 Weeks of Travel, 1 Week Off


Company Profile:

Rapidly growing 3rd party O&M is actively recruiting 8 MV/HV Substation Techs to join the team. This is an immediate opening working various solar utility sites throughout the US for 5 weeks of travel and then 1 week home (5 on, 1 off) focusing on Medium and High Voltage substation work working 50-65+ hours per week. Typically, the MV/HV Substation Techs will typically travel within the same state with a high volume of needs in CA, AZ, and TX with the first project in San Luis Obispo County, CA.


Compensation: $45/hr.-$55/hr. + bonus + Full Benefits


Scope of Responsibilities:

The high voltage technician is responsible for conducting planned maintenance outages as well as responding to and correcting unplanned outages in renewable energy project substations and collection systems. The technician is responsible for aspects of safety in the above-mentioned activities. In this position you shall have extensive knowledge and experience switching and Lock Out Tag Out for substation components as well as collection systems.

You work in the field, hands-on, leading by example and training other employees in Lock Out Tag Out, electrical safety and best work practices. The technician will review Arc Flash studies, read one-line diagrams, schematics, mechanical drawings, equipment manuals and other technical documents to develop switching and maintenance procedures for High Voltage Maintenance, Testing, and operations in substations and collection systems. You will train other technicians in proper switching, safety, maintenance, and testing of all high voltage systems. Additional Responsibilities include:

· Work safely in and around energized substations, transmission lines, and collection systems performing thorough inspections of substations, collection, and transmission systems. You will respond to off-hour trouble issues and events for substations, collection, and transmission system operations.

· De-energize equipment and safely discharge stored energy to troubleshoot equipment problems and issues to the component level to remove and replace faulty electrical components. (i.e., Motors, Auxiliary relays, coils, etc.)

· Utilize test equipment such as HV thumpers with TDR to Locate and repair underground cable faults within collection systems. Perform collections system repairs to underground systems and utilize test equipment such as Megohm meters and VLF to prove repairs.


· Interface and communication effectively with customers.

· Perform standard OEM and NETA preventative and predictive maintenance and testing on substation and collection system equipment utilizing various types, kinds, and models of test equipment. (Ie. Power Factor, SFRA, TTR, DLRO, CB Analyzer, Vacuum Bottle tester, SF6 analyzer, Megohm meter)


· Author, verify and perform switching orders.

· Identify and maintain necessary safety equipment (i.e., Grounds, sticks, meters, etc.)

· Work with customers to schedule and coordinate equipment outages.

· Maintain a strong safety mindset and drive the EHS culture.

· Develop and further expand technical knowledge and expertise of currently recognized industry standards for HV system maintenance.

· Train and mentor developing technicians in electrical safety and proper maintenance of equipment.

· Ensure safe use of additional equipment such as man lifts, bucket trucks, forklifts, and aerial platforms.

· Perform IR(Thermography) scanning and develop reports as to findings and any recommended repairs.


· Perform oil transformers samples.


· Perform substation battery maintenance and testing.


Qualifications:

· Ability to travel within a regional area (90% or higher)

· 5+ years of hands-on experience in High, Medium, and Low voltage maintenance and testing of electrical power equipment.

· Experience installing, maintaining, testing, and repairing circuit breakers, transformers, switchgear, air switches, URD cable and components, and similar equipment.

· Capable of troubleshooting distribution and transmission controls circuits.

· Lead investigations of electrical related issues, including root cause analysis as needed.


· Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

· Ability to operate test equipment needed for the project.

· Ability to function as an on-site lead for the project, assign tasks, prioritize activities and interface with customers.

· Ability to perform splicing and HV/MV terminations (required)

· The ability to read and fully understand protection and control schematic diagrams and wiring diagrams and catch mistakes and problems with the drawings and design when comparing with accepted engineering and customer standards.

· Ability to determine and interpret customers’ requirements and provide final deliveries including prints built and all test results meeting specified requirements.

· Ability to understand manufactures’ literature to facilitate testing.

· Experience in switching on substation and collection systems.

· Hands-on experience with pertinent substation and collection system equipment
