About the Opportunity
Reporting to the Director, Engineering, we have an opportunity for a Senior Electrical Project Engineer to join our Corporate Centerra team who will support the company’s global growth by managing technical and project functions across multiple international sites. This position is a hybrid role based at our Toronto, ON office, however we are also open to considering candidates located throughout Canada.
This collaborative role involves close coordination with in-country project and construction teams, as well as internal stakeholders, to ensure the successful delivery of concurrent mining projects. The ideal candidate will have proven experience in electrical and automation engineering, design of large-scale mining equipment, and oversight of project planning, procurement, construction, and commissioning, with knowledge of both North American and international codes and standards.
Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
•Develop corporate specifications and Standard Operating Procedures related to design, engineering checking, document control, vendor document submittal and review requirements, and ensure that engineering methods and procedures are maintained.
•Provide expert electrical and instrumentation engineering support to meet operational needs, bringing diverse perspectives to problem-solving.
•Coordinate and interface with venders, suppliers, stakeholders (internal and external) and other design disciplines to execute assigned engineering work.
•Conduct energy efficiency evaluations and recommend cost-effective upgrades using modern technologies.
•Prepare technical documents, such as: engineering drawings (including GAs, DDs, EDs), change paper markups, calculations, design/analysis reports, design requirements, design manuals, bill of materials, design specifications, technical specifications, component specification sheets, commissioning specifications, etc.
•Oversee design and implementation of power and control systems for new mill equipment based on distribution availability.
•Implement established quality assurance / quality control and risk programs within the Project Management Office.
•Participation in the overall procurement process, including scope definition, specification preparation, datasheet population, tender evaluation and recommendation, contract award, kick-off meetings, and expediting both internal and external parties to meet the schedule requirements.
•Verify construction is built as per IFC drawings and Client specifications, using approved materials only.
•Ensure equipment package costs are monitored against the Authorization for Expenditures. Coordinate with project controls with regards to cost performance, variance reports and new estimates as developments change.
•Follow-up with vendor representatives to verify that all technical documentation required for fabrication and shipment are submitted and reviewed in accordance with the project schedule.
•Participation in design reviews from an electrical and automation perspective.
•Collaborate with and provide oversight of suppliers thru procurement and construction to develop, perform, and review unit, module, system, and integration test plans, procedures, and reports including; factory acceptance, site acceptance, pre-operational, and start-up tests including inspection, test, or analysis and acceptance criteria thru commercial operations date.
•Able to read, understand and update various technical deliverables including Electrical Single Line Diagrams, Wiring Diagrams, I/O Loop Drawings, Process Flow Diagrams, Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams, Process Control Philosophies, block models, mine plans, equipment lists, instrument lists, valve lists and line lists.
•Maintain an effective and professional relationship with all suppliers, including regular in-person meetings with critical stakeholders.
•Preparation of minutes of meeting for various project meetings and following up on action items with responsible personnel to ensure that items are closed out completely and on time.
•Perform other duties as assigned.
About You
The following will be critical to successfully performing this role:
•Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
•A licensed Professional Engineer in good standing.
•10+ years of experience in electrical and automation engineering and design.
•A minimum 5 years of experience in the mining industry in either project development or operations.
•Experience directing internal and external teams involved in multiple projects.
•A familiarity with and previous experience implementing electrical systems in North American.
•Previous experience acting as an Owner’s representative would be an asset.
•Additional competency in another engineering discipline, such as structural, mechanical, programming or instrumentation would be an asset.
•Prior experience in heavy industrial construction and commissioning would be an asset.
•Experience in technical writing or document management would be an asset.
•Experience using AutoCAD and developing design drawings would be an asset.
•Project management training would be an asset.
•Strong expertise in electrical and automation design as well as construction and commissioning for major mining projects.
•Must be results-oriented and able to prioritize and focus on the key deliverables.
•Strong verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.
•Ability to execute plans and tasks within schedule and budget is essential.
•Strong decision making & problem solving skills, with appropriate risk management competencies.
•Strong planning and organizational skills.
•Ability to operate within a corporate team structure to deal with complex problems with minimal supervision.
•Ability to work under pressure during negotiations and discussions with contractors, vendors, consultants etc. and to meet tight project deadlines.
•Strong document creation, preparation, editing and overall management skills using the Microsoft Office Suite.
•An ability to work proactively in a small team environment.
•Ability to interact with all stakeholders with tact and diplomacy.
