The Senior Mining Engineer / Project Estimator is responsible for the development of detailed multi-disciplinary capital cost estimates, conceptual estimates, defined project estimates and accompanying schedules and project methodologies for engineering and tendered contracts for underground mining projects which are intended to ensure continued growth of the company.
This role should be considered to have significant interaction with all company departments including operations, engineering, and project management and demonstrates a customer centric approach to generating sustainable business opportunities for Dumas.
Duties & Responsibilities
As a member of Dumas’ technical team, you will be responsible and accountable for:
- Lead the analysis and evaluation of tendering and business opportunities to support Dumas’ business platform. Include the review of drawings, designs, specifications and commercial / contractual documentation for all business opportunities.
- Prepare and develops comprehensive cost estimates from first principles and corresponding proposals for tender opportunities and/or engineering studies.
- Provide ongoing technical support to existing portfolio projects, including components of project management and project reporting.
- Work effectively and collaboratively with other individuals in the organization to obtain, review and support the commitments necessary for project success at the tendering phase.
- Work closely with all operational divisions to track, monitor, report and reconcile estimated versus actual performance and costs across Dumas’ project portfolio.
- Provide continual improvement recommendations to cost estimating and project management procedures to refine and reduce discrepancies between actual and estimated project costs.
- Be able and prepared to travel for site visits, work in branch or joint venture partner offices. Travel may include international assignments.
- Determine scope of work and define contractual requirements for the estimate to ensure Dumas is submitting competitive tender packages.
- Attend site visits and collect the required information in order to carry out estimates.
- Interact with the Engineering department and external suppliers to obtain material / equipment prices and analyze comparative pricing.
- Determine the original work schedule on which the bid estimate is assembled.
- Prioritize & plan tender process to ensure bid is submitted on time.
- Suggest and calculate alternative contract forms relating to specific tenders
- Perform other duties as may be assigned.
- Based on experience & knowledge, after analyzing bid scope, identify work that can be done concurrently to maximize utilization of resources & maximize return on bid.
- Ensuring bids prepared are competitive and provide required rate of return for Company.
- Constantly keeping abreast of market value of manpower and equipment resources
- Constantly monitoring equipment & material costs.
- An engineering or technical school grad with at least five (8) years specific experience in the mining industry. Having your P.Eng. license would accelerate your effectiveness and impact.
- Must be legally able to work in Canada.
- A solid, hands-on understanding of the complexities of underground mine development from feasibility studies, construction to project commissioning and completion will help ensure you can meet the needs of all stakeholders but most importantly our clients.
- Have sound presentation abilities. This role will require an outward-facing client-centric attitude.
- Have highly advanced analytical skills, delivering technical insight and operational recommendations beyond just developing cost estimates.
- Estimating and scheduling software skills need to be well developed. Must have a level of proficiency with Estimating Software (InEight Estimate), and proficient with scheduling and project management software such as Primavera P6 / MS Project, Power BI, etc.
- You are a step ahead if you can communicate fluently in Spanish and/or French. More importantly, you are an influencer who can communicate well in a cross functional team environment.
- You must be able to work in a position of trust, in a highly confidential area of the business.
- You are comfortable with meeting strict deadlines and working under pressure
- Must have mastered the use of specialized underground estimating software packages such as Pro Gest or Hard Dollar that have been modified specifically for the underground mine contracting business.
- Previous underground project experience, especially related to shaft, development, raising and construction and projects.
- AutoCAD experience, up to and including 3D modelling of underground excavations.
- Experienced in the design of drilling patterns and explosives loading for all types of underground excavations.
