Senior Geotechnical engineer

In this role, you will be reporting to and assisting the Technical Services Manager in the Glencore North American Legacy Assets (NALA) group in managing the requirements of Glencore’s Fatal Hazard Protocol (FHP 5 Ground / Strata Failure) requirements for the NALA sites through the implementation and maintenance of ground control management plans (GCMP). The Geotechnical Engineer ensures the ongoing stability and safety of NALA sites through inspections, geotechnical analysis, and risk management. The position involves developing practical solutions to ground control challenges, leading incident investigations, and supporting remediation strategies. The engineer also works closely with internal teams and external partners while guiding junior staff to enhance geotechnical risk management throughout the sites.

More specifically, you will be expected to:

- Conduct annual visual inspections and audits of mining hazards and features at NALA sites to ensure continued ground control safety.

- Perform geotechnical data gathering, joint mapping, and other field activities to support the Ground Control Management Plan.

- Provide geotechnical stability assessments for underground and open pit excavations.

- Plan, develop, and coordinate geotechnical data acquisition, data analysis, and site characterization for mine closure projects.

- Implement, manage, and review data from ground stability monitoring systems such as InSAR, borehole extensometers, and other instrumentation.

- Conduct and participate in risk management processes related to ground stability.

- Coordinate ground control incident investigations and analyses, including the design and implementation of remediation and prevention strategies.

- Collaborate with technical personnel at closed mine sites, NALA Management, consultants, and external organizations to execute geotechnical projects.

- Define geomechanical domains, carry out stability analyses, and prepare technical reports.

- Maintain monitoring equipment installed on site.

- Train site personnel on GCMP & Trigger Action Response Plan programs.

- Conduct crown pillar stability investigations.

- Participate in group assurance audits related to ground control management.

- Manage, coach, and mentor junior geotechnical staff or other personnel involved in geotechnical risk management.

- Carry out other duties and assignments as required by the Technical Services Manager.

Do you have what it takes?

- Bachelor’s degree (B.Sc) in Geological or Mining Engineering, with a specialization in Rock Mechanics (Mining Geotechnical Engineering).

- Registered Professional Engineer or eligible for registration in the province of Ontario.

- Minimum of 15 years of operational experience in geotechnical engineering at both underground and open pit mine sites.

- Proficient in geotechnical numerical modeling using industry-standard software.

- Effective written and verbal communication skills in English. French language skills are considered an asset.

- Proficient organizational and project management skills, including the ability to plan, schedule, prioritize multiple assignments, and deliver high-quality results on time.

- Demonstrated leadership experience, with the ability to mentor junior staff and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, consultants, and external stakeholders.

- Highly developed problem-analysis skills, capable of assessing intricate geotechnical risks and enacting viable solutions.

- High attention to detail and accuracy in field data collection, monitoring, and reporting.

- Flexible and capable in changing operational environments, encompassing both underground and open pit scenarios.

Travel:

You will be required to travel to the different NALA sites approximately 30% of the time.

Language:

Advanced proficiency in English (verbal and written) is mandatory. The knowledge of French is beneficial.

Location:

Corporate office in Toronto when not travelling to sites.
