Summary:
Responsible for the short and long-range financial forecasting process for Great River Energy (GRE), including preparation, reporting, and analysis of the forecast, working closely with various internal departments, functions, and personnel, including accounting, financial planning and analysis, and treasury. Serves as the technical subject matter expert for GRE’s financial forecasting tool. Assists with the coordination and completion of other financial analysis, as assigned. Assists with the internal and external financial reporting process. Assists with the drafting and maintenance of accounting policies, standards, and regulations, monitoring new accounting pronouncements and driving necessary communication and process change to implement relevant new standards.
Total Rewards:
A typical starting range for this position is $113,000 - $155,000 annually. Responsibilities: Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to
•Assists in the coordination of GRE’s short and long-range (30 years) financial plan, including balance sheet, operating statements, and cash flow statements. Financial plan prepared based on the financial strategy provided by the board of directors, including financial metrics and margin requirements.
•Assists in the design, development, and implementation of GRE’s customized forecasting tool used to prepare the long-range financial plan, with detailed assumptions and analysis for rating agencies, investment community, member cooperatives, and GRE management.
•Is a key member of the long-range financial planning team by liaising and coordinating with subject matter experts within the budget and rates team, the Integrated Resource Plan team, construction plans, operation areas, market services, and other groups.
•Assists with the publishing of the long-range financial plan and supporting schedules.
•Monitors financial model results based on various assumptions and communicates outcomes to finance leadership to aid in future financial decisions.
•Assists with efforts to provide periodic updates to the long-range financial forecasts to be used for strategic scenario planning and future capital market transactions.
•Performs complex economic analysis and analytical reviews on various issues, which may result in a major financial impact to GRE and member cooperatives, as requested.
•Performs financial analysis such as return on investment, payback analysis, member rate impacts, rating agency financial ratios, and other industry related analytics.
•Actively participates in strategic planning process by developing complex spreadsheet models and databases utilized for strategic scenario planning and financial strategy analysis.
•Assists in the preparation of monthly and quarterly financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
•Assists with the preparation of the regulatory basis (RUS Form 12) financial statements.
•Assists in preparation of GRE annual report.
•Supports business development activity, including due diligence and preparation of purchase or consolidation accounting.
•Supports GAAP accounting and issue identification and resolution, including research and coordination/communication with auditors.
•Assists with the research and documentation of the accounting for complex transactions.
•Assists with the maintenance of comprehensive accounting policy documents to improve clarity and consistency with changing accounting requirements.
Qualifications:
Education & experience
Bachelor’s degree or higher in accounting or finance with at least five years of relevant experience. Public accounting experience and Certified Public Accountant designation preferred. Strong computer technical skills required.
•Knowledge of and ability to develop an accurate budget and forecast that expresses planned operations for GRE in financial terms for a given period.
•Skills in logical problem-solving, with the ability to thoroughly research issues and analyze various types of information.
•Skills in strategic planning, including the ability to formalize a long-range plan to define GRE goals; ability to assess internal and external factors which have an impact on success.
•Skills in conducting financial analyses by evaluating GRE’s financial position and operating performance; ability to apply such information to decision-making.
•Knowledge of and proven ability to interpret and apply GAAP.
•Knowledge of electric utility industry, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, and Rural Utility Service accounting principles helpful.
•Ability to research and propose company positions on complex accounting issues.
•Proficient in using the Microsoft Office suite, including Word, Access, Excel, and PowerPoint. Experience with Infor helpful.
•Skills in preparing complex spreadsheets, including creating macros, complex formulas, calculations, and reports.
•Skills in utilizing relational databases, creating tables, joins, ad hoc reporting, and data mining functions.
•Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships, both internal and external, to establish credibility and trust.
•Skills in conflict resolution, including the ability to address differences of opinions and the application of facts; using the most appropriate method to reach an effective solution.
•Ability to work with and maintain confidential information.
•Ability and responsibility to work safely alone and with others while following GRE safety rules, certifications and procedures.
•Ability and responsibility to ensure security procedures are followed including immediate notification of potential incidents.
