About This Job

About Torus

Torus is a pioneering, sustainable energy solutions company based in Utah, dedicated to revolutionizing renewable energy storage and management. Our mission is to empower communities to become their own sustainable energy providers.

We are driven by a deep-rooted commitment to sustainability and community. We tackle critical challenges facing the American energy landscape. Our advanced Torus Spin Flywheel™ technology charges and discharges electricity 16 times faster than traditional batteries, ensuring rapid response to grid demands and enhancing energy efficiency.

Our advanced manufacturing, research, and development facilities in South Salt Lake and Springville, Utah drive continuous innovation, and our commitment to American manufacturing ensures quality and reliability. Join us at Torus and be part of an exciting team that is transforming the energy landscape.

About the Role

We are looking for a talented Data Scientist to lead our AI/ML initiatives and drive innovation in renewable energy solutions through advanced machine learning, anomaly detection, reinforcement learning, and intelligent automation systems. The ideal candidate is passionate about leveraging data to drive innovation in renewable energy solutions and create a seamless user experience for our customers.

The Role and Data @ Torus

As a Senior Data Scientist at Torus, you'll spearhead our advanced AI/ML strategy. We operate with a "full-stack data practitioner" philosophy and have a modern data stack (dbt, Redshift, Airflow, Fivetran, Metabase, and Streamlit). You'll architect and implement AI systems including reinforcement learning frameworks, anomaly detection pipelines, intelligent automation systems, and selective LLM integrations.

In this role, you'll help drive the strategic vision for how advanced AI (in all of its flavors!) transforms our mission. You'll lead the development of sophisticated ML systems that process diverse energy datasets, create autonomous decision-making frameworks through reinforcement learning, and deploy real-time anomaly detection systems that ensure grid reliability and optimize system performance. Your work will directly influence product strategy and guide team members in implementing best practices for production AI systems.

Our products operate within complex ecosystems including IoT, the electrical grid, commercial and industrial buildings, and smart home devices. Your expertise will help us leverage these ecosystems and all relevant public data to proactively identify inefficiencies, equipment failures, and grid disturbances before they impact customers.

Who You Are

Action-oriented: You're proactive and find solutions to existing problems. You lean toward experimentation and rapid prototyping over endless planning.

AI/ML innovator: You stay at the forefront of AI research and excel at translating breakthrough techniques into production systems.
Naturally curious: You're eager to explore emerging technologies and find novel applications in the energy domain.
Adaptable: You thrive in a startup environment that demands autonomy, speed, and comfort with ambiguity.
Mission-driven: You're passionate about using data to combat climate change and transform how people consume energy.
Team-focused: You work well as part of a collaborative data team with full-stack data practitioners.
Self-starter: You're excited to work in a rapidly growing startup and apply your technical skills to help customers live clean, renewable lives.

What You'll Own

Full-Stack Data Practitioner

Discover, ingest, and leverage available datasets to inform strategic decisions

Develop robust data pipelines to collect, clean, analyze, and manage critical business data
Apply a range of analytical approaches—from descriptive analytics to advanced machine learning (ML or DL)—to solve complex energy optimization problems
Provide expert analysis of large, complex, and unique data sets from IoT devices at scale
Build and implement predictive models that drive product intelligence and business strategy
Move data science out of notebooks and into production to deliver real value to customers
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate data insights into actionable recommendations

Advanced ML/DL

Lead the design and implementation of autonomous decision-making systems for energy optimization and system performance
Architect real-time anomaly detection pipelines for IoT sensor networks, equipment monitoring, and grid stability
Build sophisticated anomaly detection models for early identification of equipment failures, grid disturbances, and energy inefficiencies
Create simulation environments for testing and validating RL policies before production deployment
Establish best practices for responsible AI development, including model governance, bias detection, and explainability frameworks

Required Experience

Typically requires a graduate degree in Data Science or a related field and 5–7+ years of experience, but we value diverse learning paths and welcome candidates who demonstrate equivalent expertise.
Expert SQL skills with extensive experience working with relational databases and non-relational databases
Expert data science programming skills in Python
Experience with big data platforms such as Redshift, Athena, etc
Experience with, or willingness to learn, our modern data stack: dbt, Airflow, Fivetran, and Streamlit
Familiarity with cloud computing (AWS)
Production experience with deep learning frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow, etc.) and specialized experience in reinforcement learning libraries (Stable-Baselines3, Ray RLlib, OpenAI Gym, etc.)
Hands-on experience designing and deploying anomaly detection systems for time series and multivariate sensor data
Experience with unsupervised learning techniques for anomaly detection (autoencoders, isolation forests, one-class SVM, statistical methods)
Experience deploying ML models in production environments with proper monitoring, versioning, and rollback capabilities
Hands-on experience with model serving frameworks for real-time inference (TensorFlow Serving, TorchServe, FastAPI) and streaming data processing

Preferred Experience

Knowledge of distributed systems, edge computing, or federated learning for IoT applications

Experience with multi-agent reinforcement learning and coordinated autonomous systems
Knowledge of advanced anomaly detection techniques including deep anomaly detection and self-supervised approaches
Experience applying RL and anomaly detection to IoT time series data, sensor fusion, and industrial control systems
Experience with predictive maintenance, equipment monitoring, or industrial anomaly detection systems
Experience with causal inference, counterfactual reasoning, and explainable AI for critical systems
Familiarity with AI safety practices, robustness testing, and responsible deployment of autonomous systems
Knowledge of LLMs and RAG systems with practical experience in selective integration where beneficial
Experience integrating LLMs and RAG systems for specialized technical applications
