Senior Dam Safety Engineer – Hybrid
The Opportunity
The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is currently recruiting for a Senior Dam Safety Engineer to join our passionate team of professionals. We are looking for someone who wants to make a positive impact on Alberta’s energy sector.
As a Senior Dam Safety Engineer, you will provide regulatory oversight for energy-sector dams in Alberta; this includes incident response, inspections, and the technical review of regulatory submissions. You will be part of the team that has regulatory oversight of 200+ energy-sector dams across the province, including some of the most complex tailing structures in the world. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to engage with a variety of stakeholders, including dam operators, consultants, and regulators in other jurisdictions.
Our ideal candidate has a strong geotechnical engineering background with dam safety engineering experience and is looking to make a meaningful contribution towards the safe operations of dams in Alberta.

What your day-to-day will look like:•Implement the AER’s Dam Safety Program in alignment with relevant government policies, regulations, and AER strategic objectives.
•Take responsibility for regulatory oversight of a designated portfolio of dams.
•Conduct comprehensive technical reviews of dam safety regulatory submissions, including design reports, dam safety performance reports, and risk assessments.
•Perform field inspections, track nonconformances and safety deficiencies, and identify areas of noncompliance.
•Respond to safety incidents, providing expert support to the AER's oversight efforts.
•Provide specialized technical insight on complex geotechnical matters throughout the full life cycle of dams, advocating for a collaborative, enterprise-wide approach.
•Contribute to the training, growth, and mentorship of fellow team members, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional development.
What we’re looking for in you:
•Bachelor’s degree in civil, mining, or geological engineering is required, with a master’s degree or higher in geotechnical engineering is preferred.
•Registration, or immediate eligibility for registration, as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).
•8-10 years of relevant geotechnical engineering experience and 5 years of experience in the design, construction, or operation of earthfill or tailings dams.
•Familiarity with the Alberta Dam and Canal Safety Directive and related legislation.
•Experience with Canadian Dam Association (CDA) dam safety guidelines and bulletins, as well as Mining Association of Canada (MAC) tailings management guidelines, would be considered an asset.
•Proficiency in industry-standard geotechnical software packages.
•Proven track record of managing multiple deadlines, projects, and priorities.
•Collaborative team player with the ability to influence decisions without direct authority.
•Meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to technical accuracy.
Additional Information:
•All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application.
•Pre-placement medical and a fully valid class 5 driver’s license along with a positive driving record is required.
•Required physical demands: Walking / traversing on uneven surfaces.
•Additional training is required and will be provided: First Aid, Driver Training.
•Travel required with overnights stays. Approximately 5% is field work.
