Principal Engineer, Substation Design and Drafting (Hybrid Schedule)
Eversource supports work-life balance by offering hybrid schedules for certain roles. Eligibility is based on job responsibilities, operational needs, nature of work and team dynamics. Current guidelines require employees to work at least three days in the office, including Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with the third day set by the employee and supervisor based on department needs. These guidelines apply to roles approved for remote work and are subject to change, based on managerial discretion and work performance. All applicants must be able to work up to five days in the office if needed (for example: emergencies, training, or other business needs) or should the policy change.

The Principal Engineer performs an Engineering Department leadership role. Recognized as having technical expertise in electrical or applicable discipline engineering design, construction standards, ANSI/IEEE Standards, NEC, NESC code requirements, Electric operating procedures, and regulatory compliance. Develops strategic plans for major engineering problems and opportunities and has responsibility for interpreting, organizing, executing, and coordinating assignments. Heads engineering quality assurance and quality control program. Develops long range department plans and recommends strategy to be implanted on projects. Develops and updates material and equipment standards, including operating procedures. Directs and prepares documents/testimony and written responses for local, state, and federal regulatory requirements and proceedings. May, as assigned, serve as team or project leader for unique / special engineering assignments.
- Serve as technical specialist to Substation Engineering Department
- Recognized as the technical expert both internally and externally.
- Solves complex technical problems requiring recognized expertise, e.g. Electrical engineering design, long range system planning, system analysis, site / safety investigations, structural / material analysis, equipment qualification, code assessment / adherence, etc.
- Integrates cross functional groups or teams to implement projects and special initiatives.
- Leader in engineering quality assurance and quality control program.
- Direct teams or project leaders on sensitive and highly complex engineering projects as a technical advisor when required.
- Works with senior management on sensitive, confidential projects
- Formulates Eversource technical positions and recommends company policies and standards on various issues within expertise.
- Presents, directs and / or prepares corporate testimony and written responses for rate cases and other local, state or federal regulatory proceedings.
- Interfaces with federal, state and local organizations external to Eversource on behalf of or as a representative of Eversource
- Serves on various Eversource internal committees and task forces to provide information and recommendations to Eversource senior management.
- Provides both technical guidance and training for less experienced personnel.
- Represents Eversource on various industry and professional society committees and working groups.
- Prepares for senior Eversource leadership such written material as letters and reports in support of positions and policies on various technical aspects.
- Acts on behalf of Engineering Lead or Manager in their absence as assigned.
- Will have storm restoration, on-call and emergency assignments.
- Provides feedback and assists in performance reviews
- Demonstrated through sufficient experience very high standards of professional and technical competence, and to have a complete and thorough knowledge of technical skills including system-wide application of his/her discipline.
- Initiative and aggressiveness to search out problem areas, creativity to devise technically sound solutions and confidence to make technical decisions in solving complex problems based largely on own effort with little or no supervision.
- Possess highly developed communications skills, i.e., ability to write clearly and concisely, make presentations before senior management, ability to discuss ideas and be persuasive, and be able to work effectively with all levels within Eversource, governmental agencies and other outside organizations.
- Thorough knowledge of federal, state and local regulatory criteria, industry codes, and standards applicable to the specific area of expertise.
- Thorough knowledge of accounting and engineering economics applicable to the specific area of the position.
- Ability to provide work direction for others, assume authority and be assertive.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret information in order to propose decisions with respect to the specific area of the position in solving highly complex problems.
- Ability to grasp concepts, analyze technical information, determine facts and make well thought out recommendations/decisions.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical and Computer Engineering required
- Master’s degree in Engineering preferred
- Ten years in related experience in Electrical engineering planning, design, construction, and operations
- Experience with electrical utility design and operations
- Must be available to work emergency restoration assignment as required.
- Must be available to travel between MA/CT/NH as necessary.
- Depending on the specific nature of the engineering role, position may require occasional to significant travel by car. A valid driver’s license is required.
- Attendance at professional industry events (IEEE/NEMA/CIGRE) is expected, will require travel outside the service territory 10% of the time

Responding to emergency situations to meet customers’ needs is part of every employee’s role. If employed, you will be given an Emergency Restoration assignment. This means you may be called to assist during an emergency outside of your normal responsibilities, work hours and location.
