This Helper Apprentice Qualified (HAQ) Power Plant Maintenanceperson position performs unskilled and semi-skilled work under direct and indirect supervision at Kapaia Power Station. Assists in the installation, repair and maintenance of mechanical, piping and structural equipment for the purpose of becoming a Journeyman Power Plant Maintenanceperson through the company's apprenticeship program.
This position requires the incumbent to be physically on-site. Applicants must be authorized to work for ANY employer in the United States. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time.
Rate of pay is determined by the current collective bargaining agreement.

- Knows and applies company policies, safety programs, and other applicable rules and procedures.
- Works from instruction books, blueprints, sketches, oral and written instructions.
- Assists in setting up and operating machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, grinders and drill presses. Learns properties and uses of metals. Assists in aligning machine.
- Assists in arc and gas cuts steel and nonferrous alloys. Arc and gas welds, brazes, and silver solders steel and nonferrous alloys. Assists personnel of higher classification in heating machines parts for shrink fits.
- Assists in using precision measure instruments accurately such as inside micrometers, outside micrometers, calipers, depth gauges, dial indicators, etc.
- Must observe standard and special safety and environmental regulations pertaining to his/her job at all times; required to use protective equipment as prescribed and furnished in order to protect self, fellow workers, others, and their property. Must know where MSDS sources are and related safety information. Understands and follows company's LOTO, confined space, hotwork and similar safety policies.
- Assists in performing operational or overhaul maintenance on power plant equipment such as boilers, turbines, internal combustion engines, fuel handling systems, safety devices, fans, heaters, pumps, compressors, tanks, etc.
- Assists in performing general maintenance and repairs on fences, property, buildings, structures and other company equipment.
- Assists in laying out, install or making repairs all types of piping and valves including hangers, supports, etc.
- Assists in doing concrete work including the construction of forms, installation of steel, cementing and finishing.
- Assists in rigging, using rope, rope blocks, cable, slings, and various fittings; splices and cares for ropes and blocks.
- Operates company motor vehicles. Is responsible for operating motor vehicles according to traffic code, safety rules and operating procedures. Maintains company vehicles and trucks under his/her responsibility.
- Assists in electrical installation or repair work.
- Assist in instrumentation installation and/or repair work.
- Maintains plant cleanliness.
- Performs similar and incidental duties as required.
- Must have high school diploma or a high school equivalency exam. Preference will be given to candidates that can demonstrate prior experience in the maintenance/mechanic field.
- Must pass differential aptitude tests (standardized tests of abstract reasoning, mechanical reasoning, verbal reasoning, and numerical ability) and other job related tests as deemed necessary by the company.
- Must have or be able to obtain a valid State of Hawaii Driver's License.
- Must pass the company's pre-employment physical examination and substance abuse test, and be capable of performing the required physical work of the position.
- Must have the ability to clearly and effectively present information and respond to questions from customers and the general public.
- Must possess good interpersonal skills and organizational skills to handle multiple priorities.
- Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instruction in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; and see, talk or hear.
- The employee is required to walk, bend and reach with body, legs, feet, hands and arms.
- The employee must occasionally lift, carry, and/or move up to 45 pounds.
- The noise and dusty level in the work environment is as would be encountered in normal commercial/industrial sites. Occasionally works in noisy, hot areas for hours at a time.
