The Role
Petronas Canada is evolving — and we’re looking for a strategic and experienced Operations Capability Development Lead to join our HSE team based in Calgary. While this role is anchored out of our Calgary office, a strong field presence is essential — you can expect to spend approximately 1-2 weeks per month in Fort St. John, depending on operational and team needs, working closely with frontline teams.
This is a key leadership role that bridges safety, operational performance, and people development together. You’ll partner closely with field leadership, technical experts, Human Resources, Health, Safety and training resources to ensure our workforce is equipped with the right skills and confidence to operate safely and effectively — today and into the future.
How You Will Contribute
- Lead the overall strategy and execution of the Operations Training & Competency Management Program
- Provide leadership and oversight to a field-based training team delivering onboarding, upskilling, and competency assessments
- Partner with frontline supervisors and SMEs to identify evolving skill needs across operation
- Build and maintain structured training pathways, aligned to organizational priorities and regulatory requirements
- Oversee the development and governance of technical SOPs, job aids, and learning content
- Embed effective and consistent competency assessment and verification processes
- Monitor program effectiveness and drive continuous improvement using field feedback and performance metrics
- Champion a learning culture that supports safety, operational excellence, and employee development
- Recognized certifications or formal post-secondary training in instructional design, adult education, or workplace learning (e.g., CTDP, CPLP, Train-the-Trainer, or equivalent)
- 10+ years of experience in operations training, competency development, or technical workforce development, preferably in oil and gas or industrial sectors- Demonstrated leadership experience, including managing or mentoring training teams
- Strong understanding of competency frameworks, adult learning principles, and field-based assessment methods
- Proven ability to build trusted relationships across field operations and corporate functions
- Excellent facilitation, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills
- Experience with LMS platforms, digital training tools, and blended learning delivery methods
- Knowledge of operational safety standards, procedures, and regulatory training requirements is an asset
