This entry/intermediate level position is available at Columbia Energy Center Generating Station located in Gaston, South Carolina. The candidate would be responsible for all functions relating to the operation of plant equipment including regularly monitoring, maintaining, and checking plant equipment, isolating, and tagging equipment for maintenance, and preparing equipment for operation. Work hours are 12/hr. rotating shifts. The Plant Operating Technician reports directly to the Operations Manager.
- Responsible for regularly monitoring, maintaining, and checking all plant equipment
- Maintain continuity among work shifts by communicating daily activities, actions, irregularities and continuing needs during his/her shift
- Respond to audible alarms, process changes and sound variations as required
- Participate in daily preventive, scheduled and repair maintenance activities on various plant equipment
- Provide assistance with plant clean-up and housekeeping activities as required
- Must be able to read and understand written instructions, procedures and logbook notations as required
- Responsible for compliance of all plant safety, environmental and health programs and procedures during his/her shift
- Perform all duties and administrative tasks as assigned by the Operations Manager or other supervisory personnel
- Work rotating shifts, including days, nights as well as some holidays
- Be available to respond to callouts and urgent needs 24 hours/day, 7 days/week.
- This position is trained to respond to and required to support the Plant's Emergency Response Team.
- Performs other duties as requested or assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience
Minimum Requirements (Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications):
Operating Technician I: Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience
- A minimum of 0 -2 years’ work experience in mechanical maintenance or related field maintenance is required.
- Basic candidate requirements include prior or current power and/or military power generation experience.
- Chemistry sampling experience is a plus.
- The candidate must have a working knowledge of pumps, valves, compressors, and other related equipment.
- A strong mechanical aptitude, basic understanding of chemistry, physics, electricity, and mathematics is also preferred.
- Must be able to work outside in environmental conditions which at times include extreme heat, extreme cold, heavy rain and in rare cases snow.
Operating Technician II: Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience
- It includes all requirements of the Operating Technician I position while obtaining greater knowledge skills and duties related to operation of the plant.
- A minimum of 2-5+ years’ work experience in mechanical or related field maintenance or related field is required.- Chemistry sampling experience is a plus.
- The candidate must have a working knowledge of pumps, valves, compressors, and other related equipment.
- A strong mechanical aptitude, basic understanding of chemistry, physics, electricity, and mathematics is also preferred.
- This level position is also responsible for all functions relating to the operation of plant equipment.
- This includes regularly monitoring, maintaining, and checking plant equipment, isolating and tagging equipment for maintenance, and preparing equipment for operation.
- This level position is also responsible for operation of a full on-site water treatment plant, including conducting various start-up/shutdown and water analysis of the equipment it supplies.
The physical conditions for both levels include the following:
- Must be in good physical condition with the ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. or more on a frequent basis.
- Must be able to safely climb tall structures at extreme heights (fixed ladders and/or stairs up to 100 ft.)
- Must be able to carry up to 20 lbs. while walking, climbing stairs, as well as having the ability to extend arms through normal range of motion while standing and squatting.
Completion of High School or equivalent is required.
Must have a valid driver's license with a safe driving history.
