Interns are temporary employees who provide support for District staff at varying levels and who receive on-the-job training. Interns are assigned to work on a broad range of projects and assignments in different District units. Interns work side-by-side with District staff to obtain working knowledge and training in the area of assignment related to their field of study. Placement in this classification is temporary, and permanent employment is not guaranteed.
The District may not employ an Intern for more than six (6) months full time (21-30 hours per week), or if working on a part-time schedule (20 hours or less per week), more than 1,000 hours or 125 days in a fiscal year. Subject to these fiscal year time limits, intern work assignments are limited to a maximum of 12 months.
The intern will support the Office of the General Manager (OGM) in a variety of cross-departmental projects and initiatives aimed at enhancing the District's emergency preparedness, sustainability planning, community engagement, and organizational knowledge. This role offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in public administration, intergovernmental affairs, and program development within a public utility setting. Position involves assisting OGM with a wide variety of projects and assignments, including developing written materials, assisting with the development of presentations; implementing social media efforts; assist with coordinating special events; representing the District at community outreach events; assisting with administrative and clerical support; assisting with various public relations activities; drafting press releases and newsletter articles and other duties as assigned.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF DUTIES MAY INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:
+ Utilize data from Local Hazard Mitigation Plan (LHMP), determine how to integrate and identify hazards into Emergency Response Plan (ERP) to better prepare our community to be resilient and responsive to emergencies. + Deliverable: Spreadsheet of identified hazards from the Multi-jurisdictional Local Hazard Mitigation Plan (MJLHMP), identify where to incorporate the data into the ERP.
+ ACWD Climate Action and Adaptation Plan (CAAP) is a standalone document. Identify other local CAAPs. Determine if/how/what is an overlapping priority for the local Cities, Counties, and special districts. + Deliverable: Spreadsheet of local CAAPs priorities.
+ Coordinate with Tri-City school districts to develop a water bottle refill station partnership. + Deliverable: A water bottle refill station pilot program including agreements, refilling station model types, program promotion, signage, and installation of water bottle refill stations at schools.
+ Conduct research to support the Office of the General Manager related but not limited to, community advisory committees and governance and special projects. + Deliverable: Present research findings to the Legal, Intergovernmental and Community Affairs Committee, and develop projects as appropriate.
+ Serve as a District representative at various community events to raise awareness of District programs and initiatives. + Deliverable: Attend District-hosted and community events that may require work outside of normal business hours, including nights, weekends and holidays.
+ Meet with different departments and/or divisions and spend a day assisting in that unit to gain familiarity with the entire district and business functions. + Deliverable: Complete a job shadowing log, documenting learnings and observations from each department.
Strong analytical and research skills, along with proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word for managing data and preparing reports. Excellent written and verbal communication skills to present findings and engage with internal teams and community members. The candidate should be organized, detail-oriented, and capable of working both independently and collaboratively. Ability to develop content for social media outlets/websites. Must be currently enrolled in college. Completed coursework in business administration, public administration, planning, and environmental sciences or a related field. Flexibility to attend occassional evening, weekend and holiday events is also expected.
Must possess a valid driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record. This position requires frequent driving to perform essential job duties, which may include attending meetings or doing business at various off-site locations. Alternative forms of transportation are not suitable due to security concerns, logistical challenges, and time constraints.
