POSITION OVERVIEW – Natural Gas Trading Attorney
Our Client is seeking an experienced Attorney with a specialization in natural gas and power trading to join our legal team on a contract basis. The successful candidate will play a critical role in supporting Client’s natural gas and power trading business by providing legal expertise on transactional, regulatory, and risk management matters. RESPONSIBILITIES
•Draft, review, and negotiate complex natural gas and power trading agreements, including NAESBs, PPAs, transportation, storage, and related commercial contracts.
•Provide legal counsel to Clients trading, risk, and commercial teams on issues impacting natural gas trading, transportation, and related transactions.
•Ensure compliance with all relevant federal and state regulations, including FERC best practices.
•Draft, review and negotiate ISDA Master Agreements including Power Annexes.
•Monitor and interpret regulatory changes and communicate their impact to internal stakeholders.
•Advise on credit, risk management, and dispute resolution matters pertaining to natural gas transactions.
•Support due diligence, transaction execution, and contract management processes.
•Collaborate and coordinate with counterparties, external counsel, and regulatory agencies as needed.
•Deliver internal training and guidance on contracting standards and legal risk mitigation.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS:
•Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
•Active license and good standing to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
•Minimum of 10+ years’ legal experience in natural gas and energy trading law.
•Demonstrated experience drafting and negotiating NAESB, PPAs and ISDA agreements.
•In-depth knowledge of federal and state regulations governing natural gas and power trading (FERC, CFTC, etc.).
•Proven ability to provide timely, practical, and solution-oriented legal advice in a fast-paced environment.
•Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
•Prior in-house counsel experience with an energy trading company, utility, or energy marketer.
•Familiarity with physical and financial natural gas trading, pipeline tariffs, and transportation agreements.
•Experience with credit support arrangements, master netting agreements, and ETRM systems (such as Endur, Allegro).
•Background advising on compliance, audits, and internal investigations in the energy sector.
•Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across multi-disciplinary teams and with diverse stakeholders.
