Summary:

Collects samples and monitors industrial and NPDES discharges and assists in laboratory as time permits.


Duties and Responsibilities:


(Other duties may be assigned)

Installs, operates, and performs routine maintenance on fixed and portable monitoring or data collection stations.

Cleans and maintains field monitoring/sampling and laboratory equipment.

Collects water samples from observation wells, streams and lakes, or raw, semi processed or processed water, industrial wastewater, or water from other sources to assess pollution levels.

Delivers samples to the laboratory for testing and maintains chain of


custody data.


Performs field analyses, as required.


Enters pretreatment data using applicable software.


Prepares chemical solutions accourding to standard formulae.


Assists lab personnel as directed


Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

High School or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) required.

A.A. degree in scientific field and one to two years related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience is desirable.


Language Skills:

Ability to read, write, and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Must have the ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to clients and other District employees.


Mathematical Skills:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.


Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, electronic, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.


Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations:

A valid Illinois motor vehicle operator's license is required with a CDL preferred.


Other Skills and Abilities:

Must have the ability to operate a standard sized cargo van. Familiarity


with database and spreadsheet operation is desirable.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear and read. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk (non-paved areas), sit, climb, balance, and use hands to handle or feel, reach with hands and arms and smell. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, knee, crouch or crawl. The employee may also be required to enter confined spaces and navigate construction in progress areas.

The employee must regularly lift or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee works outside; in and out of a vehicle; within the plant and occasionally in the laboratory. These conditions are compliant with all OSHA regulations and include: incidental VOC's, temperature controlled work environment, and vagrant odors. The employee is required to enter industrial facilities for the purpose of site inspection and/or sampling.

Although a large percent of this employee's time is driving, he/she must have the ability to work outside in the most extreme of conditions several hours per week.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but can be severe when visiting heavy industrial sites.
