Springdale Water Utilities is now accepting applications for the position of Meter Reader
Travels assigned routes and takes readings of water meter dial, inputs data into handheld computer to determine consumption and provide the necessary information for accurate utility billing. Note any changes in consumption, location of meter, or meter condition. (In terms of leakage, damage, or malfunction). This position is required to be on call (duty assignment) at scheduled weekly intervals and to be available for working outside normal business hours. This is a safety sensitive position.
Perform physically demanding work including the reading of water meters, turning on and off water meters, removal of materials from the City’s water meter boxes to insure proper functioning. Respond to and resolve customer requests, complaints, and inquires. Respond to emergency calls after hours. Operate and maintain company vehicle in a safe and appropriate manner. Interact in a professional and respectful manner with the staff and public. Perform other duties and responsibilities as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES TO MEET JOB REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge of geography and street locations within the City. Knowledge of layout of meter locations within the City. Knowledge of methods, equipment, and materials used in meter reading. Knowledge of record keeping techniques. Knowledge of interpersonal skills in using tact, patience, and courtesy. Ability to work independently with little direction. Ability to walk for extended periods of time over considerable distances. Maintain a good attendance record. Demonstrate the ability to work safely and efficiently. Demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with co-workers. Work well with the public and supervisors.
High school diploma or equivalent required. Must possess and maintain a valid Arkansas Drivers License commensurate with work duties and be insurable by the carrier providing automotive insurance coverage for the Springdale Water and Sewer Commission.
Class IV Water Distribution Operator’s License issued by the Arkansas Department of Health is desired.

Reading meters requires considerable physical activity and outdoor work, in inclement weather, and varying temperatures. Walking for extended period of time, manual dexterity to operate a hand held computer, visual acuity to accurately read meters and other work related materials, speak and hear to exchange information, climb, kneel, bend, or squat down in order to remove debris or read meters. Gaining access to meters requires lifting meter covers weighing up to 10 pounds; lifting of meters up to 20 pounds; and occasionally lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds. There is occasional to frequent exposure (varying by season) to yard and garden environments beyond the employer’s ability to control. Exposure includes dogs, poison ivy/oak, and pollens. Meter readers are expected to observe safety precautions while working in/near streets, highways and other public thoroughfares.
