Performs the metallurgical engineering analysis of materials, such as chemical, metallographic, mechanical testing and scanning electron microscopy. Applies both specific technical and diversified knowledge of metallurgical engineering principles and practices in the conduct of performing laboratory testing and analysis of materials. May direct these activities depending upon experience and particular situation. The incumbent is expected to make substantive judgments in developing, modifying and implementing procedures to achieve laboratory analysis. Responsible for the ongoing maintenance and adherence to applicable QA program requirements and procedures, as this testing and analysis also supports Nuclear Power plant testing and evaluations. Responsible for preparing and overseeing technical report development for completed analysis, including reports by lower level employees. Where applicable, applies the practices/specifications identified in ASTM, AME, ANSI, and ASME.
Typical Duties Include
- Conducts failure analysis on items submitted from customers. Gathers metallurgical information to support analysis from sources such as: professional literature, internet, other Metallurgical Engineers. etc.
- Development of written test plan for each analysis.
- Writing technical analysis report.
- Interfacing with customers to discuss failure environment, expected scope of testing and analysis actions, scheduling of job.
- Ensuring equipment calibration, maintenance, repair and scheduling general preventative maintenance for both laboratory and field instruments is performed.
- Operation of various laboratory and field equipment in support of analysis, such as computerized X-ray fluorescence crystal spectrometer, scanning electron microscope, optical microscopes, hardness testers, and other assorted mechanical testing equipment.
- Interacts with customers to assist with the selection of materials for particular applications.
- Participate in process improvements, performance assessments, task teams, etc., to help identify solutions and improvements in processes and methods.

Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in metallurgical, materials, mechanical or chemical engineering, or related engineering degree, from an accredited curriculum, plus related continuing education. Member of Professional Society (member grade); Technical Societies (member grade or equivalent); and publication of engineering papers, articles, textbooks are desirable.
License as a Professional Engineer is desirable (may be required in accordance with TVA Business Practice 15).
Must have demonstrated proficiency in metallurgical, materials, mechanical, or chemical engineering as evidenced by completion of Engineering Graduate Progression Plan or equivalent post engineering graduate education and experience.
