Idaho Power — located in vibrant Boise, Idaho — is looking for Mechanical Engineering Interns to join our summer 2026 internship program. It’s an exciting time to work for Idaho Power. Our work plays a critical role in communities we serve across Idaho and Oregon, and we’re working hard to safely provide our customers with the safe, reliable, affordable energy they depend on. In addition to the meaningful work we do, we offer work-life balance, competitive pay and benefits, an employee incentive plan, and both a 401k employer-match and a pension plan, making Idaho Power one of the best employers in the state.
What does a Mechanical Engineering Intern do for us?
Operating under supervision and with significant oversight, an Engineering Intern works within an assigned group to assist engineering staff while gaining valuable skills and experience. They may interface with internal departments and external organizations, receiving regular guidance from leaders and other engineers.
Idaho Power Company Commercial and Industrial Energy Efficiency Program provides technical assistance and financial incentives to help our commercial and industrial customers make changes to their systems and processes to decrease their electrical energy use and lower their operating costs. The intern will collect and analyze data on a wide variety of industrial systems such as: compressed air, ammonia refrigeration, pumping systems, fan systems, HVAC, controls, strategic energy management and lighting. The intern will be performing customer site assessments and energy efficiency calculations for a variety of different customer’s mechanical systems. Additionally, this role exposes interns to the complex and dynamic nature of energy efficiency in the regulated utility industry.
With a strong foundation in hydroelectric generation and growing investments in resources including solar and battery storage, we’re now tackling the challenge of meeting rapid energy demand growth across the region. As an intern, you’ll help build and refine a model of the regional power system that guides how we balance energy generation, transmission, and demand-side solutions. You’ll dive into the operations of hydro, thermal, nuclear, storage, and renewable resources across the Western Interconnection, gaining hands-on experience with the tools and methods used to optimize power plant operations. This is a unique opportunity to develop an analytical framework to address real-world energy challenges, learn how energy systems operate across diverse geographies, and contribute to Idaho Power’s long-term resource planning.
