Mechanical Engineer / Project Manager

Overview
Education: Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university is required.
Registration: Professional Engineering registration in Mississippi is beneficial but not required
Experience: This position requires 10 years of relevant experience in project engineering for mechanical systems and project management.
Generally responsible for interface with clients and project stakeholders to develop project scopes of work, perform engineering duties for mechanical systems and working with a design team to develop documentation to support construction. Work at this level requires extensive experience in mechanical engineering and involves applying advanced engineering techniques and analysis. Basic knowledge of construction methods for civil, structural, electrical and instrumentation/controls systems will be beneficial in order to succeed in this position.
This work will be performed at the Columbus, MS Office.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
•Interfacing with clients to understand stakeholder goals, develop project scope of work documents and work with discipline engineers to develop engineering and design project proposals.
•Utilizing department design team to develop construction documentation required to construct various types of mechanical systems.
•Familiarity with mechanical specifications, piping codes & standards, piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) and mechanical construction methods.
•Accomplishing engineering activities such development of equipment specifications, material procurement specifications, calculations and total installed project cost estimates.
•Developing conceptual layouts and cost studies as necessary to determine the simplest, most efficient approach to solving engineering tasks at hand.
•Knowledge of the project stage gate approval process and the ability to support development of various fidelity level cost estimates.
•Working with other engineering disciplines to ensure proper coordination and interface between mechanical, electrical, civil and structural systems design.
•Reviewing and checking vendor drawings and other discipline drawings for mechanical input.
•Producing engineered designs which are constructable and as cost efficient as possible as well as meeting the expectations of the client.
•Checking calculations made by other engineers to ensure accuracy, conformance to codes, specifications, design criteria and conformance to good engineering practice.
•Knowledge of scope management and the change order process.
•Assisting other engineers in developing and assembling scopes of work, drawings and specifications into a “package” for mechanical purchase inquiries issued for procurement of equipment, materials or subcontract pricing.
•Reviewing fabrication drawings and other construction submittals for conformance to engineering drawings and specifications.
•Performing fieldwork necessary to gather field data, check tie-ins and provide construction support.
•Knowledgeable of the discipline specific methods, practices and techniques required to engineer, design and construct process and manufacturing projects.
•Provide leadership to ensure communication and execution of work within scope, schedule and budget.
Qualifications
•Project engineering and project management experience – some experience in the small to medium size projects is highly recommended.
•Knowledge of mechanical design standards and codes.
•Knowledge of piping systems to include piping specifications, P&IDs, isometric drawings and calculations for hydronic systems.
•Design and engineering of various mechanical systems to include pumps, compressors, fans and heat exchangers…for example.
•Knowledge of manual valve sizing, use and application.
•Knowledge of application of piping supports and restraints.
•Estimating mechanical/piping construction quantities from conceptual documents.
•Knowledge of other disciplines deliverable development to ensure coordination of design efforts.
•Knowledge and understanding of schedule constraints and information requirements for the production of all mechanical deliverables. Knowledge of Microsoft Project and ability to develop a project schedule.
•Ability to accurately estimate required engineering support for specific project tasks.
•Ability to develop a construction cost estimate, a detailed engineering schedule and a man-hour budget for a small project or an area for a larger project.
•Ability to lead a small team to develop a project scope of work, maintain scope during development and finally deliver on commitments.
•Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
•Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
