Position Scope
The Mechanical Engineering Co-op is responsible for providing mechanical engineering support at Carbon Engineering’s Squamish facilities; working closely with the operations, major projects, and technology development teams. Example work includes piping design, material selection, insulation specification, support/frame design, and drawing development. The student will be exposed to software tools such as MathCAD, Python and Autodesk Inventor as well as industry specific design software.
- This position is an 8 month or longer co-op term. Start dates are flexible.
- This position is on-site and based in Squamish, BC.
- The work schedule follows a M-F, 40hrs/week schedule.
- Relocation support is provided.
- This position pays $22-26/hour.
- Expected start date is January 2026.
- Demonstrate a positive safety culture.
- Identify, report and resolve unsafe conditions, processes or actions within the workplace.
- Ensure that all safety related incidents, accidents and near misses are reported and investigated in line with company policy.
Mechanical Engineering
- Support small projects on site by providing engineering judgments and calculations on proposed solutions through the MoC process.
- Heat transfer (insulation), hydraulic, and stress/structural calculations are key. The co-op student will learn how to complete these to a level where sound engineering judgments can be made based on their results.
- Parts selection and ordering, producing drawings and bills of materials for small and medium-sized equipment designs.
- Troubleshooting and problem-solving on both plant and laboratory equipment and processes.
- Fitness-for-Service analysis of worn and/or damaged process equipment.
- Hand assembly, prototyping.
- Review of designs for code compliance. Reading and interpretation of ASME, ANSI, CSA and other codes and standards.
- Support the development of specifications for, for example, piping, coatings, insulation, structures, etc.
- Support the review of vendor proposals and documents to ensure conformance with CE specifications.
- Support the assembly of specification packages for RFP documents.
- Support specification deviations; conducting research on implications, preparation of spec. deviation memos (stamped by the Engineer of Record).
- Engineering documents – Support the updating and accuracy of our engineering drawings.
- Checking/review – participate in review cycles for externally produced documents.
- Document Control – Assist in the identification and retention of controlled documents for the deployment of new EDMS software.
- Currently enrolled in Canadian post secondary institute (3rd, or 4th year)
- Preference to candidates in a relevant BEng / BASc program (Mechanical)
- Motivated curiosity, mechanical aptitude are a must.
- Keen interest in solid mechanics and material science.
- Experience with Excel, Python, MathCAD and/or Autodesk Invetor or other 3D design tools a plus.
- Experience with ASME B31.3, CSA 149.1,.3, National Building Code or other relevant industry codes and standards are a plus.
- Ability to work in all weather conditions and noisy work environment.
- Safe handling of chemical products is required.
