SUMMARY
Under general supervision, the Mechanic diagnoses, maintains, and repairs a variety of District vehicles and equipment, including gasoline, diesel, and alternative fuel-powered engines. Work includes heavy and light trucks, construction equipment, generators, and small engines. Responsibilities include preventive maintenance, use of shop tools and diagnostic equipment, and occasional response to after-hours emergencies or overtime assignments. The Mechanic is responsible for ensuring regulatory compliance related to fleet operations, including maintaining required records, completing inspections, and preparing and submitting reports. Performs related duties as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Mechanic is a journey-level position responsible for performing technical and specialized duties independently. The role requires extensive prior experience, and the incumbent is expected to be fully trained, competent, and able to work with minimal supervision.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED
This position receives direction from the department head, manager, or supervisor, as assigned and provides training and mentorship within the scope of their duties to other employees of the District.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The following are representative of the qualifications necessary to perform the essential duties of the position. Any combination of education and experience which would likely provide the necessary knowledge and abilities may be qualifying.
Experience:- Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment. Experience managing a fleet within a water utility is preferred.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must possess and maintain in good standing a valid California Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License, along with all required endorsements, including but not limited to air brakes.
Training/Certificates: Possess and maintain (or have the ability to obtain within 9 months of appointment).
- Certified On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) Tester
- Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications: A1 Engine Repair, A4 Suspension & Steering, A5 Brakes, A6 Electrical/Electronic Systems, A8 Engine Performance, and A9 Light Vehicle Diesel Engines.
- Possession and maintenance of a State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) Water Distribution Operator Certificate, Grade I or higher, is required to participate in the on-call rotation.
The Mechanic is responsible to possess, maintain, and/or obtain all necessary certifications required by changing regulations. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and training required to maintain/obtain certifications is the responsibility of the employee, with support from the District.

This is a safety-sensitive and Federally regulated DOT position subject to the District's Drug Prevention and Employee Testing Program, which is conducted in accordance with Title 49 CFR Part 40.
