In 2024, Steel Reef entered into multiple long-term Power Purchase Agreements with SaskPower. Following construction of additional utility-grade electricity substations and generation turbines powered by recovered flare gas, Steel Reef will provide more than 100 megawatts (MW) of electricity within Saskatchewan and North Dakota, which could power more than 100,000 homes annually.
Measurement Specialist
Position Summary:
Steel Reef is seeking a Measurement Specialist to join our Calgary team. In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring the accurate, reliable, and compliant measurement of hydrocarbons across our Saskatchewan and North Dakota operations. You will play a key role in maintaining and optimizing measurement systems, overseeing audits and regulatory programs, and partnering with Operations, Engineering, and Production Accounting to uphold measurement integrity. The ideal candidate brings strong technical expertise in metering systems and industry standards, along with a proactive mindset for problem-solving and driving continuous improvement. Steel Reef’s midstream business focuses on the gathering and processing of solution gas, requiring the successful candidate to have strong expertise in gas and NGL metering systems.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead Steel Reef’s measurement program, driving measurement excellence while ensuring regulatory compliance across Saskatchewan and North Dakota.
- Champion the rollout and effective use of ProTrend to manage sampling, analysis, and device calibrations.
- Work closely with field measurement counterparts to help manage maintenance activities, align on troubleshooting, and enhance the measurement program.
- Work closely with Production Accounting to ensure accurate measurement data in the monthly reporting process.
- Collaborate with Operations, Engineering and Production Accounting to evaluate, troubleshoot, and resolve measurement challenges.
- Work with customers and stakeholders to respond to measurement inquiries and effectively close out audit findings.
- Establish practices to proactively identify and resolve measurement error.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date measurement schematics.
- Oversee meter proving to meet company policy and regulatory requirements, ensuring calibration and correction factors are accurate across all systems.
- Train and support stakeholders in managing third-party owned measurement facilities and production meter calibrations.
- Manage and coordinate third-party measurement service providers to execute the EPAP program, including annual audits, officer sign-offs, and regulatory declarations.
- Ensure metering design and installation practices comply with engineering standards, manufacturer requirements, and regulatory specifications.
- Support Steel Reef’s use of applications such as Zedi to consolidate and manage data from EFM and SCADA systems
- Conduct internal audits on measurement reporting, sharing findings and driving continuous improvement in measurement performance.
- Contribute to budgeting processes by identifying and justifying potential upgrades to measurement systems.
- 5 - 10 years of direct experience in Oil and Gas measurement, with strong emphasis on gas and NGL measurement.
- Diploma in Instrumentation Engineering Technology, Journeyperson Certificate in Instrumentation and Controls or an Engineering degree in a related discipline.
- Experience with production accounting practices and industry applications such as ProTrend and Zedi.
- Willingness to travel regularly to operating sites.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to travel to the USA for business purposes.
