Job Summary
This Manager leads and oversees the function of the Electric System Protection Department.
Essential Functions
- Assigns and coordinates System Protection Engineering duties, responsibilities, and assignments
- Directs stability, short-circuit, coordination, reliability, and impact studies for transmission, generation and distribution systems to predict, analyze and verify expected operating characteristics to ensure safe deliverability of power.
- Ensures the maintenance of associated system models and databases for transmission, generation and distribution protection systems
- Assigns development of the procedures, processes, and documentation for protective relay specifications, coordination, settings, and logic / control diagrams to be implemented in the field according to applicable FERC, NERC, RFC, MISO, and NIPSCO standards or requirements
- Leads the analysis and review of existing protection schemes and/or scheme additions as well as the coordination/initiation of relay setting changes or additions to improve the Distribution, Transmission or Generation system integrity, security, reliability, safety, and facility availability
- Coordinates the protection and control setting implementation process with stakeholder groups to ensure the process results in timely and uneventful field implementation
- Serves as Subject Matter Expert for System Protection related NERC reliability Standards during Compliance Audits and Spot Checks
- Leads the review of protection system operation events with transmission operations, generation operations, and field engineering groups to identify problems or to initiate necessary improvements
- Facilitates responses to customer requests regarding new facilities, load additions, and protection coordination between customer and NIPSCO assets
- Performs System Protection Engineer performance evaluations, and creates specific development plans and opportunities for all direct reports
- Maintains proficiency by participation in industry reliability and protection forums or working groups in order to consult with external entities to ensure that proper protection techniques are implemented in accordance with applicable industry standards and for safe and reliable operation of the grid
- Ability to identify and implement process improvement changes to better facilitate System Protection duties, responsibilities and/or workflow
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from ABET accredited university/college program with emphasis in power systems
- 5+ years experience in power system protection and control within an electric utility- Strong background in system modeling calculations / techniques / approaches (Aspen, CAPE, etc.)
- Proficient with FERC, NERC and RFC Protection and Control standards applicable to department
- Strong communication, presentation, and computing skills as well as strong quantitative and qualitative analytical skills
- Ability to manage multiple projects or work assignments while ensuring all work conforms to all applicable standards and is completed within the budgeting and scheduling constraints
- Valid driver's license.
- Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering (MSEE) with power system focus and/or Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA)
- Prior experience in: electric utility, a senior level engineering role of System Protection
