Description
Valero is looking for a Manager Corporate Products & Laboratory to join the Process Optimization & Support team at the Valero Headquarters in San Antonio, Texas. The Manager Corporate Products & Laboratory serves as analytical Chemistry subject matter expert for all Valero laboratories and technical/commercial groups including identification and troubleshooting analytical test methods and process unit analytical support.
This role sets standards for refinery labs, including control charting, standardization of techniques, and round robin testing. The Manager is also responsible for upgrades to the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), managing commercial product specifications, and maintaining strong working relationships with refinery laboratory staff and management to ensure effective communication, direction, and quality assurance.
Responsibilities may also include:
•Provides analytical chemistry support for the corporate Process Optimization and Support group including troubleshooting of analytical methods, feedstock quality and process unit operational issues.
•Liaises with the IS group regarding future development and upgrades of product specification management and laboratory information systems.
•Ensures compliance with appropriate corporate, governmental, and general industrial safety and health standards. Reviews federal, state, and local safety regulations, and works with local safety management to ensure compliance at Valero laboratory and testing facilities.
•Develops consistent laboratory policies, practices, procedures, equipment, information management systems, and physical facilities to measure qualities of refinery feedstock, intermediates, and finished products. Provides systems for measurements for routine quality control, regulatory compliance, and special engineering studies. Works directly with the lab managers technical network.
•Provides leadership, direction, and coordination for establishment and maintenance of on-line stream quality measurement systems that operate in concert with laboratory systems.
•Provides leadership, direction, and technical resources to develop and maintain laboratory statistical quality control systems as appropriate to meet testing quality standards. Works with commercial groups to support product quality investigations on finished products.
•Assists in development and administration of laboratory capital and operating budgets including non-routine third party testing and benchmarking activities.
•Enforces accountability of laboratories to provide high integrity, quality services to the all their customers. Develops round robin testing practices to prove reproducibility of results both inside and outside the corporation. Assists with setting up systems to provide measurement standards, certification samples, proto fuels, etc.
•Interfaces with industry and governmental quality assurance organizations to certify laboratories for special products such as asphalt, military fuels, etc.
•Represents Valero’s interest on various ASTM committees and alerts management to ASTM proposals that would adversely affect Valero businesses.
This position is salaried exempt status, which means you are not eligible for overtime pay.
Qualifications
•Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, or related field required.
•10 years of refinery laboratory operations, product quality assurance, or similar refinery operational experience required.
•Able and willing to travel 10 – 25% of the time to support Valero's laboratories, required.
•Able and willing to work on-site, in-person at the Valero San Antonio location, required.
•Experience in both field and corporate lab operations is preferred.

Position level and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
