Maintenance Mechanic

Overview:

Cedar Falls Utilities is currently recruiting for a full-time Maintenance Mechanic to join our Electric Production department. This position performs specialized mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of complex plant machinery and equipment used in high pressure steam and combustion turbine generating stations.

The Maintenance Mechanic works under general supervision of the Power Plant Maintenance Supervisor.

Compensation & Benefits

- CFU offers on-the-job training and will enroll employees into an 8-step apprenticeship program, consisting of classroom and field training.

- Non-commission, straight hourly based pay structure.

- Starting wage is based upon individual qualifications. Full position rate is $46.04/hour once a candidate can successfully perform the essential job functions.

- Typical work schedule is Monday - Friday, 7:00am - 3:00pm with two 20 minute breaks.

Responsibilities:

- Performs precision bench, hand tool, and machine operations in a large variety of assignments.

- Performs water treatment tests.

- Assists and/or acts for Control Room Operators in emergencies.

- Maintains and insures proper operation of combustion controls, steam, gas, air, and water measuring devices.

- Repairs and replaces pipe lines for steam, water, gas, oil, and chemicals as required.

- Installs and maintains, switchgear, motors, and controls under the close technical direction of a qualified supervisor or engineer, giving consideration to individual experience, education, and capabilities.

- Repairs and maintains all turbines, generators, condensers, fans, pumps, air compressors, pulverizers, cooling towers, wells, trucks, tractors, coal handling equipment, boilers, combustion turbines, diesel engines, and all other auxiliary power plant equipment.

- Maintains specialized plant equipment such as the air-cooled condenser and the continuous emission monitoring system.

- Operates coal and ash handling equipment as needed.

- Operates and repairs reverse osmosis equipment. Assists with plant cleaning and related work for other departments as assigned.

- Responsible for maintaining a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner that promotes positive relations with customers, coworkers, and management.

Qualifications:

Education:

- Graduation from high school or vocational school, including or supplemented by courses in the mechanical trades, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the ability to perform the job functions as defined.

Experience:

- A minimum of 4 years experience in mechanical maintenance work in a high pressure steam and combustion turbine electric generation plant preferred.

Certifications/License:

- A valid CDL is preferred.

Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:

- Knowledge of: Considerable knowledge of practices, methods, equipment, machine and hand tools used in plant maintenance work. Knowledge of greases, oils and other lubricants used for proper machine operations. Knowledge of occupational hazards connected with maintenance work.

- Skills: Skilled in the use of high accuracy measuring instruments required for alignment and adjustment of high speed equipment. Skills must include carpentry, welding, masonry, electrical, painting, boiler operation, and turbine operation.

- Ability to: Work from sketches, blueprints, or instruction manuals and carry out oral and written orders without direct supervision. Establish and maintain cooperative work relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Physical Tasks and Environmental Conditions:

- The physical demands described here are characteristic of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee must occasionally lift at least 50 pounds, be alert to ergonomic hazards and possess the capability to climb ladders and/or stairs. The employee must also be capable of working in conditions with rough terrain and awkward/difficult positions. This job requires a high activity level.

This position requires a hearing exam and a pulmonary lung function test, which is required for respirator use.
