Key Areas of Accountability and Responsibility
Reporting to APMC’s General Counsel, the Legal Counsel will provide legal advice and support on a wide range of commercial matters, with a strong focus on contracts and regulatory compliance within the oil and gas industry. This role contributes directly to APMC’s strategic initiatives and public-sector mandate in Alberta’s energy sector. We are seeking a a pragmatic, business-minded legal professional with 5–7 years of experience who thrives in a collaborate fast-paced environment and is passionate about supporting public energy initiatives.
- Draft, review, and negotiate a variety of commercial contracts, including supply agreements, service contracts, joint venture agreements, and NDAs
- Provide legal support on corporate governance, regulatory compliance, and risk management initiatives
- Advise internal stakeholders on legal implications of business decisions and transactions
- Support the General Counsel in managing legal matters across the organization, including litigation, employment law, and external counsel coordination
- Monitor and interpret changes in legislation, directives, and industry regulations affecting APMC’s operations, including those issued under the Petroleum Marketing Act and the Financial Administration Act.
- Assist with legal due diligence and documentation for corporate transactions and strategic initiatives including value-added opportunities pursued by APMC
- Develop and maintain legal templates, policies, and procedures to ensure consistency and compliance
- Contribute to special projects and evolving legal needs as required.
Candidate Attributes, Professional Experience and Qualifications
- LL. B or J.D. from a recognized law school; member in good standing with a Canadian law society.
- 5–7 years of legal experience, ideally gained in a law firm or in-house legal department.
- Proven experience in commercial contract negotiation and drafting.
- Strong understanding of the oil and gas industry, including regulatory frameworks and operational risks.
- Experience with public sector governance, policy development, or government directives is an asset.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
- Business-oriented mindset with a proactive approach to problem-solving.
- Experience in a fast-paced environment with multiple deliverables within a short time frame.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (e.g.: Excel, Word, Visio, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint).
- Strong communication, both written and oral, with effective interpersonal skills
- Highly motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently or in a team environment
- Ability to engage with internal stakeholders, external counsel, and government or industry representatives as needed.
